Road Cycling - cyclocomputers that the buttons work from the brake/shifters?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What is the deal w/ cyclocomputers that the buttons work from the brake/shifters? It seems like a good idea. Is it worth messing with? If so which cyclocomps have that feature?
The only ones I know of are the ones from Campagnolo and Shimano. Cateye actually makes the Campy ErgoBrain. I don't know who makes the Shimano FlightDeck or if they manufacture it in-house. I have the FlightDeck and find the buttons on the hoods to be nice but more of a luxury... kind of like having radio controls or cruise control buttons mounted on the steering wheel of your car. I would really like to see Shimano and Campy license out the interface (or better yet, make them an open-spec) to the shifters so that other companies can make compatible computers.

The computer is a Shimano Flight Deck, you have to have a flight deck compatible brake\shifter combination for it to work. It automatically figures out the cadence without having to run the wire to the crank, and it graphically tells you what gear your in. Its slightly larger than a normal computer, the only thing that stinks is that on a road bike you have to remove and redo the tape on the bars. THe Face goes for 50ish and the hardware for about 35 for the wired and 50 for the wireless. They have a kit that mounts buttons if you dont have a flight deck compatible shift/brake lever.
I forgot to add that some people don't like them at all because for whatever reason, they inadvertantly trigger the buttons when they're gripping the hoods.

Thanks for the info. That explains why I have not seen the feature on the cyclocomputers that I was looking at. My "first" road ride was on a borrowed bike that apparently had the flightdeck. I thought it to be cool but had not seen it on any computers that I looked at. I am not really in to spending $100-140 for that feature if there are only offered on the Campy & Shimano products.
