Mountain Biking - I pulled it out of the trash...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Does this make me a weirdo? My wife thinks so.
Last night my neighbor was throwing away 2 crappy Schwinn MTB's with flat tires and totally rusted chains. I took them home and plan on stripping off anything worthwhile like cables, housings, QR skewers, etc. and then taking them to the dump for a proper burial.
Would you have done the same?

I would have dug them out of the trash, but then I would have a different plan of action. Our local bike club, and boy scout camp have a deal worked our with Lansing correctional facility. we take old bikes in, they refurbish them and then they are donated to the boy scout camp.

Rebuilding them myself actually a pretty good idea. That would give me two fairly simple projects that wouldn't cost too much and could go for a good local cause...

Yeah the Kids at camp just tear them up, but they have fun and the bikes can be recycled again! With the cheap dept store bikes, breakage is a fact of life so if they need 10 bike, they try to get 15 refurbished.

I pick up bikes from the trash all the time or get them from yard sales for 20-40$. Every weekend I ride around the neighborhood only for this reason... Depending on the frame eather I rebuild them or use them for parts. I love working on bikes( sometimes more then riding).
Now does this makes me a weirdo??? Don't know, don't care... but what's for sure is that I have lots of fun and I think that is what counts the most...

If it was anything that could be ridin i would have kept it, alot of my friends dont have bikes so It would be great to have a couple extras plus if i remember correctly schwinn has a lifetime warranty on the frames so how crappy could they be?
