I'm going to be in the Point Lookout area for the next couple days and am thinking of packing my bike in the car if there is a good route or two there. If not I won't bother. Most of Long Island I remember as being kind of congested and not so great for riding, but I think I remember someone here mentioning some good rides.

Actually, looks like I am sting in Farmindale, going to a party/family gathering in Amityville and visiting folks in Point Lookout...

based on the replies I got in the road bike forum I am most likely bringing the bike. I've been in Minneapolis the last week covering the bridge story, and away from my bike, so even if I get one good ride in it will be worth it.

Since there will be parties/family gatherings, I dont' know if I will do an 8AM group ride but a good route to follow would be awesome.

Tnx

If you are staying in Farmingdale you have some nice choices.

If you want a group ride, try hooking up with groups from the Massapequa Park club (MPBC Calendar) (http://www.massparkbikeclub.org/events/calendar.php)that goes out of Massapequa Park train station on Saturdays and Bethpage library on Sunday mornings.

If you want a leisurely MUP ride you can take the Bethpage bike path south to Sunrise highway and then the extender down to Merrick road. Typical MUP: flat, busy, and need to be cautious.

If you want a solo ride where you can see other riders, come up to the service road of the LIE (495) and head west. Good chance you will meet up with other riders. Good shoulders, relatively quiet, some small hills, and the ability to go for a while.

Can't help you on routes, but I LOVE that Point Lookout area. My sister lives right down the rd in Long Beach, & I long to live in that area.
Have a great visit!
