View Full Version : Good Hills near Durham, NC
Anyone know of any? I'm thinking about something longer than a mile at >5% slope.
The best I've found are the three approaches to downtown Chapel Hill (Franklin, MLK/Airport, Pittsboro).

Maybe you'd like Mt. Sinai?

Looks good-- about the same as Franklin Street, but with nice scenery and without the cars whizzing by. Ahh, I miss California.

I like to do that hill with a buddy - the lanes are very narrow... cars go real fast and there's one nasty curve.

Mapmyride shows Lystra gaining close to 300 feet, but it's in a distance of 2 miles or more. The best way to find hills is to get some topographical maps of the area and look for the roads crossing the most lines. I recall going down a killer hill somewhere in the southern part of Wake county, but can't remember where exactly it was.
A real challenge with the hill approaching Franklin St. would be ridding it today. 103 actual temp with high humidity forecast!

I've tried that but was hoping I'd missed a good one. Here's one that I have always gone down, but it is 5% for .84 miles. Still not really long, but relatively steep.

I actually commute up that most days, including today. Thankfully, I have a shower at work. Yesterday evening at 6, it felt like a blast furnace going down.

.5 mile at almost 10%. Don't know if it is paved, though

Luckily, the only two times I've ridden that were from St. Mary's direction, i.e., downhill. Been thinking about a long ride north Raleigh thru Durham and on to Pleasant Green and return to north Raleigh via St. Mary's, etc.. Guess I won't mention that hill to ride partners.
