Mountain Biking - Disk brakes rubbing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have 8" Hayes disk brakes on my Brodie.
I understand that they flex and that they cause a pinging sound but the front brake has a rubbing sound. It doesn't seem that there is any loss of power or that the calipers are grabbing but there is this freqent rubbing sound when I am cycling with absolutely no pressure on the brakes.
I have taken it to the LBS and they say this is common with the 8" rotors.
Is this true ?

yea, any disc brake will rub, its more of a problem with 8 inch rotors because its easier to bend them. for example thinking about how much easier it would be to bend an 8 inch rotor then a 2 inch rotor, now just step up to a 6, its harder but not impossible...but anyways yea, its rubbing because the rotor is slightly bent. if you find an autoshop or machine shop with a hydro press you can have them toss the rotor under it and it will be straight again, and if thats not an option, just straighten it by hand, with a crecent wrench or something similar,
good luck in getting it all worked out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Although, when I took it to the bike shop, they checked out both rotors and said they were fine and not bent at all.
How easy is it to bend them ?
I have only had the opportunity to take this bike Mountain biking once..otherwise it has only been on the road and never dropped or hit.
I can't think of any time that the front rotor would have sustained any damage.

Rotors get hot, and when metal gets hot, it warps fairly easily.. could be what happened, or your pads could be adjusted in too far.

I have the same brakes. Sometimes they get dust or whatever on the and make a scraping sound- to cure it I just quickly and firmly jam the brakes a few times toclean the rotor and pads. Also you should remove the pads and check for glazing- if so just replace them.
