Foo - What did you learn today?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ummm.....I don't think I learned anything new today.
Yesterday was a much different story though.

Today I "learned" how to bunny hop over things. I knew in theory how to do it before but could never quite make it work :D

So you learned what was already obvious to the rest of humanity? :p

I've been bunnyhopping, in some form or another, since 2001. :)
I learned that shiny metal stuff attracts *******s who want drugs.

I learned that cylcocross is possible on my Scott. :p
I learned that clippin' out when going up a 5% grade in 53x21 can be done. :)

Somehow I knew Counter Strike would work its way into your answer.
What else could you possibly expect other than an FPS? :)
BananaTugger
08-12-07, 12:34 PM
Any chance you know how to do so in RL on an MTB?
(if so.. post the pointers, otherwise.. STFU.. (jk :P) )
I haven't done it on a MTB, but I've been bhopping sticks, manhole covers and storm drains for about three years on my roadbikes.

I waited.. but since you insist.. Ok.. on a roadie.. mtb, or any other bike for that matter... any pointers for a successful bunny hop?
(teaching is a big part of learning).
I simply shift my weight back (ass off of the saddle, but your junk should be kinda touching the back of it), put some pressure on the pedals (which should be parallel to the ground), and pull up on the bars while juking my body forward (a little) and up.
This will get me about 4-5 CM in the air, which is enough to clear debris when you are traveling 40 KPH. :D

Very good Tug.
Now remember boys and girls.. junk should be slightly touching the back of saddle.
+1
:D
Very slightly.
You don't want to whale your gear when you thrust. :D

On a MTB you want to preload those pedals since the bike is so much heavier. Pump your legs like you would on a skate/surfboard, then imagine yourself jumping up and pulling the bike under your legs and arms as you pull up and over.
Just like an ollie. Sort of.
Today I learned about hot chicks that ride bicycles in Canada.:D (Thanks randya)
It seems as though I have to relearn the same thing every other day. I can't count on anyone but myself. Everyone else is just so unreliable and can't be there for you. ****.

I've been learning this the hard way everyday for a week now.
No matter how many hot chicks I date, or cool buds I hang with, at the end of the day I'm alone.
Without purpose, that could be hell. Today I learned that the remedy for disappointment is to make an appointment with yourself, do something constructive in that time, and then repeat.
You would be amazed at how many millions of people reach out to the unneedy every day to offer their help.

Yes.
I have also learned that a piece of legal size paper taped to your desk makes a kickass mousepad.

It's not philosopy...
...it's just that, when you learn stuff, your mind tends to start thinking. Then you get depressed. Then you start to forget a little...then you drink some whisky, or ride your bike down that dangerously dumb hill, or hook up with the girl you know is no good for you...then you forget a lot and start to become happy and grin.
Until that fateful day comes when you become a little less dumb, and the hurtin' begins again.
Was reading up on Fast Neutron Reactors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_neutron_reactor) today.
A different approach to fission, or at least to most fission reactors in North America. No moderator is used, and the coolant is some sort of liquid metal.
Wild.
Sodium, if I recall. And I think the byproducts are a little more bomb-friendly.....Plutionium and such....

I have learned that not much changes.
When one is young, and just beginning to flex one's intellectual muscle, one often doesn't yet know when/how much flexing and posturing is appropriate for a given situation. Much like experiencing that first erection....

How to use /delayload switch in Visual Studio to bypass needing a required DLL that the final product really doesn't need (at least the way YOU are using it). It allows app to not load the DLL until it is truly needed (instead of on startup) so one can use the binary without having that DLL on the computer.
Pretty cool, eh?

Baybuh, even when you're "with" someone, at the end of the day, you are still alone, except by your choice. I know you get this.
And you are correct. And as my late husband used to say to me, "If you start feeling depressed, it's ok. That's simply a sign that you need to make some meaningful contributions to others, and, in doing so, you'll find a meaning to your life that you can't/haven't yet articulated. Just do it. And then see where to go from there." This has, so far for me, been a daily recipe to avoid emotional crashing.

What? We can't acknowledge female erections? Do you not understand the slight differences between male and famle anatomy during gestation? <now very curious Vega look>

I'm sayin' that some otherwise well intellectually-versed young persons are too inexperienced in life to "get it." And, being so intellectually-blessed, they know who they are, in the context of the overall conversation, and will thus not take it in any negative way. We all do continue to learn, even past 28 years of age. :) I'm sure that you, above and over others on this forum, understand and respect this, on the various levels on which it should be taken, and without affront, given your particular prodigious intellect. :)
And, I choose not to contribute on your other thread, which I find very appropriate, vs your attempt to provoke such a discussion in the midst of an otherwise very light-hearted thread. Thank you for recognizing the need to discuss your particular intellectual interests with regard to human behaviour away from what is an otherwise benign thread.
Quite simply, dear friend, I am here for reasons other than those of your own, and I have no truck with you. :)
Please, do not be offended if I choose to ignore your rather in-depth philosophical discussions (somewhat overly mentally- and emotionally-exhausing, from my rather very personal POV exhausted mental state-of-being). I'm here on BF in general, and on Foo specifically, simply for the light-heartedness that borders on the realm of "loving cycling." When I want deep philosophical discussion, I'll either PM you (serious), or seek out a philosophical/psychological forum for some real intellectual discussion. For now, Foo is, for me, good, light-hearted medicine, for a soul that still grieves. :)
Thank you for your kind and attentive response to my post(s) here in Foo, Enthalpic. :) I hope you continue to enjoy Foo as I have, and I will, no doubt, continue to see you in "Road Cycling."
