Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fork mounted lights?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I tried searching, and though there are a lot of posts on lights, I couldn't find anything about fork mounted lights. I want some removable lights that I can mount to my forks. I have found brackets that can mount to the forks to use standard bar mount lights, But dont seem to be easily removable. Is there anything out there?

I put it on my fork all the time and a lot of other people do too. Bright as hell. Knog.

I've got a few of those, including a red one on the back of my helmet. They are great.
Plus you can get cool foreign points cuz everyone in Japan has them too.

Be careful when choosing lights if you are going to be riding at night regularly. Those Knog lights probably don't emit enough light to see or be seen properly in the average urban setting?
Check out Dinotte (http://www.dinottelighting.com/) for powerful, easily mounted lights.

Youre def wrong about that.

i disagree... i think they're fine for being seen, but they don't provide any headlight.

In an 'urban setting' there are lights everywhere for that.

totally. i use fork mounted knogs on both of my bikes for just bumming around, but if i head to a park or darker neighborhood, i'll usually throw the cat eye on.

You're right. There are lights everywhere, which is why drivers won't notice two tiny ones on your fork.
I'm not saying they're useless, but I think that by themselves their light is inadequate for road use.

so we shouldnt even use bike lights at all? thats a good idea.

Any light is better than no light, but it only takes one driver that didn't see you to **** you up.

p.s. if they can cut through the never ending neon of tokyo, they can be seen anywhere. Plus blink setting ftw

i think they're extremely small and most drivers wouldn't really notice it. that's why you need big annoying lights for people to even pay attention to you. i came frighteningly close to hitting a motorcyclists stopped a red light that was turning green because their tail light was so weak--i'd say it was the motorcycle equivalent of the knog. when i ride late at night, i normally have a couple friends with me, so if they don't see us there's something wrong with their eyes.
as for fork-mounted lights, i'm a fan of the oldschool front lights that generate electricity from friction with the front tire.
knogs are great, anything but red imo. i think the red is REALLY dim compared to the other LEDs. the white is really good up front.
i just bought this kick ass 7 red leds for my back light. its the shizzle. forgot the brand name :(

i don't doubt that at all, but it's still just a single LED, you could have the brightest single LED in the world but it a) won't provide you any light if you need it, and b) it still won't be as obvious as a large halogen bulb.

That's not true. Some of the newest tech headlights for cars are LED.
Im a big fan of Audi and i know that they developed some of the first ones.
Im not saying the knogs are as bright as the ones used in the cars but they do hurt my eye when i look straight at them. :)

LED lights are overtaking halogen in almost every industry. Dinotte and Lupine make some bicycle LED lights that are more powerful than HID lights. The really powerful ones usually consist of multiple bulbs in a single housing.

so what is the battery life of the knogs? I might run a pair of them up front...and a bright as hell taillight, because it is the people behind me that really scare me. Any suggestions for a good clean taillight that puts out some serious light?

It's expensive, but it's probably the brightest.
Another taillight to look at is the Cateye TL-LD1000, which is much cheaper.
Edit: I've heard good things about the Planet Bike superflash too.

I'm buying a PB Blaze and Superflash soon, but I'd like a pair of white Knog frog lights on the front fork, and a red pair on the top stays. (Or maybe even a total of 3 superflashes on the back. :D)
i've used the knogs, but only as blinky, be seen lights front and rear (and not really much in the 'be seen' department' when looking at my other lights. in my riding these are useless for anything other than be seen lights when i stop moving. i've used the white one for reading my cue sheet when my headlamp died.
for fork lights on my long distance ride i've got dual e6s with a schmidt hub, lights mounted on the low rider mounts on the fork. i also use a cateye TDLwhatever for the rear. it throws lots of light.

on my cargo bike i have a sidewall generator and use a d'lumotech with standlight and a b&m toplight mounted to the rack for the rear light. very impressed with the d'lumotech. works great at low speeds.

my knog light does disco colors- DOES YOURS? tell me a driver won't see a disco colored bike flying at them.
plus im starting to feel that if you rely on the bike light to save your ass you arn't riding careful enough in the first place.. i ride assuming every car doesn't see me.

It seems as though the more I get into bikes, the more I realize there are a lot of products missing in the industry, like fork mounted headlights. Maybe I should start a company.....hmmm anyone want to donate to a good cause?
i've used this cateye (http://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/341) mounted to my fork. easy on, easy off. there is a rubber strap that passes through a cam so you can mount it on bars, helmet, fork, etc.

looks like this one could work too, but i've not used it.

I have one of these mounted vertically behind my seat bolt-- bright and lots of settings--I like the Night Rider one:
http://www.cateye.com/sites/cateye/upload/products/267-og.jpg
I also run a white Knog on my right fork blade. They are really bright and the batteries have lasted thus far for 4 months w/o substantial dimming. I'll probably change it out soon.
I have never really had a problem seeing at night in Tokyo (but hey, it's Tokyo). And there are no potholes or broken glass to speak of, so I'm not too worried there either.
