Hi. Just found this site and thought I'd sign up. Looks interesting.
I got into BMX racing when we signed my son up at our local track as a way to help him through problems he was having dealing with the death of his stepmom. It helped him so much, I started thinking about other kids who were having a bad time. I started to get an idea about starting a special kind of team, told my mom about it and she has been helping me get it started. I have been contacting local businesses for donations and getting kids signed up while she is going after corporate support, grants, keeping up our web pages and doing all the computer work and typing for me. (I just had surgery on my wrist and will have a cast on for several months). We've gotten a lot of support from some really great people. We have our non-profit number and have finally gotten all the paperwork through to start filing for government grants. We have 5 team members who have already signed up, have ordered 2 new bikes, 6 helmets, and enough bike parts to build more bikes with the help of frames, rims and tires that have been donated to us. If you know anyone that has BMX racing bikes or parts they would like to donate, please tell them about us. We are aiming at 10 teams of 10 kids with 2 adult staff members/mentors per team. We should be getting more kids after school starts through organizations like Foster Care, Integral Youth Services, The Angel Project and others. If you want to see what we are doing with our team, please visit our web page. Wish us luck and let me know what you think of my idea! Have a great day!
