I've signed up already for the hilly hundred and reserved a camp site for myself. I don't know how fast those things go away so I did an early registration.
Anyone else attending? Should be a nice event with thousands of riders.

I kick around doing the Hilly every year. I haven't done it since 1993, and I didn't even do the second day that year. My kicker is always finding lodging. Might try the camping route. PM me the info about camping.....

How do you register early? I thought registration opens in March.
I'll be doing it. I've done it 10 or 11 times.

They aren't talking about the Horribly Hilly Hundred that happens in Wisconsin, but another (longer standing) ride in Indiana- it took me a second to realize that myself. I guess options for event titles become limited when one remains intent on alliteration.
This one is too far away for me.

+1 - THE Hilly Hundred is the original. The HHH is a copy cat (sorry WI). It's been around so long that I used to work in the kitchen to help my mom with Band Boosters for Bloomington North High School when I was in grade school.
I remembered seeing all of the wierd looking people and thinking....that's going to be me someday.
The Hilly is an entire weekend of festivities, swap meets, live music, thousands of riders, etc. Greatly considered one of the best, if not THE best large organized ride in the country.
Get a Cutters jersey and come and ride it.

I always camp when I do the Hilly Hundred. Make sure you pack a warm bag and at least some knee warmers. Two years ago I actually woke up with frost on the clothes I had pulled out the night before. Getting dressed woke me up in a hurry, but I wouldn't recommend it.
The Hilly is an excellent time, and I'm definitely going this year. If you like good deals, you'll love the vendor tent. They also have interesting speakers in the evenings. A couple years ago they had Frankie Andreau which was pretty cool.
I have seen some guys riding their bikes to the HH from Indy and always thought that would be fun if I could figure out how to get my gear down there. Maybe if a few people wanted to do it, we could get a carpool going to deliver our gear and then ride down Friday evening.

Still have a wicked cool Shimano jersey and colored Avocet 40 computer that I got there ultra cheap. One day I'll fit into that jersey again....

This will be my first Hilly along with a few friends. Going to bring the RV. I'm going to need every bit of rest possible to have a chance to finish this! I've only been doing training on the hilly (not really) Hendricks County backroads. We're looking forward to a GREAT weekend!

wonder how quickly camper reservations are going at the state park? I might take the week off before.

I wish... this was on my "must do" for this year, but then along came a special project at work. The only weekend, in the history of my career, where a mandatory presence was requested:fight:
I am doing the Apple Cider Century next weekend though... another "must do", so at least I'm 50% happy:D

I'm headed down Friday to pick-up a friend in Indy and down to B-town for registration. He's just east of downtown, so if things work out we can see if we can run additional gear down with us.
This is my second time doing this, and I had a blast the first time. I'm adding a 27 for this because I haven't been out as much as I should have. Give a shout if you pass me up! I'll be in out of shape dude on the green/purple Klein.

I would llike to try to get down there yet again for this ride. At this stage it looks like it would be tent camping though. Anyone with any ideas for resources?
Maybe I'll camp the first night and then find a room in Columbus or something for the second night.

Anyone planning on cycling down from Indy area yet? Looks like Spinning Hossier might be able to haul some gear down which would be pretty cool. I think the added mileage would really add to the challenge and fun of the weekend.

I did my first Hilly last year, complete with tent-camping, which is not something I normally do. It was a blast...someone described it as a big, rolling party and I thought that was pretty close to being accurate. If you're on the fence, give it a try--you'll have fun, I guarantee it! VERY well-organized and a great experience to end the cycling season. Well, the warm-weather part of it, anyway.

I'll be going again and shooting some new videos on the course. Going to try some forward filming this time.

I'll be riding this year - first time for both days. Last year was the first time for me since picking the bike back up. A guy back in the HS in the early 80s tried to get me to ride, but I thouht it was 100 miles in a single ride and told him 'no way'. Last year I planned to ride both days, but a July accident with a truck from behind limited my saddle time. Look for my red Team Sparkasse jersey (big white "S") one of the days and say 'hey'.
The weather's still been hot, but is supposed to cool down mid-week to the usual temps of low 40s in the am and mid 60s for highs - should be excellent weather.
If you're still looking for lodging and don't want to camp, you could try hotels on the southside of Indy or the Greenwood area. Ellettsville is only about an hour drive down State Road 37, which would be about the same as Columbus, but a straight shot on a quick road.
I'm still thinking about going. Although I've been checking the weather daily, and rain is predicted for Sunday. I really don't want to drive that far to ride in the rain.
Anyone from the Chicago area riding?
About the hills! How tough are they? I'm a strong rider, but not the best climber. At 6'2" 215 lbs climbing is always a challenge. That is the main reason I'm interested in the ride, to improve my climbing. My concern is choosing the ride to improve my climbing ability, only to find out the hills are so steep I have to walk up them anyway. I'm new to road riding, but I have done 4 century rides in the last 6 weeks, and have been mountain bike riding for years.

JT1, I was just checking the weather and I think the rain you are seeing is for the region where you live. There is no rain in the forecast for Ellettsville or anywhere in its vicinity on either Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks for the local weather report.
Now, if you want to help me up the hills>:D

I'm headed down tomorrow to register early and visit the old stomping grounds. I did this ride two years ago and it was a blast. The climbs aren't too bad, the Water Tower climb at the end of both days gave me some trouble and Mt. Tabor is a straight shot up, but short. Check out the Hilly website for the elevation maps. The course is pretty good training since it provides a variety of steep short climbs and longer more grinding climbs. I don't think there is any climb longer than a mile and a half, and plenty of fun to be had.
I'll be on the green/purple Klein looking for the safe haven of the flats, so say hey if you see me.
Also, offer still stands to transport gear if anyone is riding from Indy tomorrow. PM me and we'll see if we can help out.

Hey all,
http://www.hillyhundred.org/PDF_Files/Hills.pdf
I was just checking out the HH homepage updates and noticed they had a .pdf with all the hills charted out. Longest climb is 1.65 miles @ 14.8%....Yup, that's Water Tower Hill. Mt. Tabor is only .2 miles long, but the grade is a knee exploding 20.2%. It's really not too bad though since it's so short. The biggest problems you'll run into is trying to find a clear path up the hill. There will be so many people walking the bike up that it makes it rather difficult to climb the hill at times. Give me a shout at the campground or on the road. I'll be on a Fuji Roubaix in a red Go Fast jersey. Have a great ride all.

I was just on part of the first day's route last weekend (link (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4137222)) and the roads were in pretty good condition it was already marked out for all of you. :)
Oh yeah, the weather looks like it's going to be great, but it's been a little chilly in the morning the past few days...like base layer, arm/leg warmers, booties, and wind vest chilly. Hope everyone has a good time!

The Hilly Hundred was a great ride and watertower hill, mt tabor, the 3 sisters and the other hills were real *****es. Mt Tabor I was just barely able to climb. Saturday was pretty darn chilly in the morning, but with a long sleeve coat I was good to go.
Sunday was slightly warmer, but I was still wearing my arm warmers.
Lot's of different bikes to be seen. At least a dozen tandems, a few bents, some very low bents (they were fast as hell) and a unicycle! The unicycle rider walked the hills, but doing that amount of mileage doing on a unicycle.... crazy.
I left a few dollars in the vendor tent for a germany jersey which I wore on Sunday and I ogled at the rollers which looked extremely nice and they were quiet compared to mine.
The event was extraordinarily well organized, I was never lost during the 3 day event and had a great time during and after the ride. I'll go next year again.

It was my first time to do both days and I was quite pleasantly surprised to feel a bit better after finishing the Sunday than I did the Saturday route. The 19 mile ride this morning to get right back at it was interesting - fine, then sore, then fine...
I was also quite happy that, while I struggled briefly a couple of times on hills to keep going, I actually managed to accelerate up the last portion of most all hills. The only exception was Mt. Tabor, which is just brutal slope, taking the power very quickly. I managed to average 17.9/17.8 mph each day - not bad at all considering the amount time climbing at much lower speeds.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. This was my third HH, and probably the best so far. Temps remained above freezing at night which made camping much more enjoyable. I had a chance to meet some great riders from all around. I had the privilege of taking advantage of a volunteer bike mechanic at the vendor tent as I had shifting issue that required some new housings and a new cable. They directed me where to pick up the supplies and installed them for free. Of course I dropped a few bucks in the tip jar, but I was just really blown away by how helpful they were. The vendor tent was pretty good this year. I spent more than I should have on a new jersey and a sweet pair of half price Carnac shoes.
The ride itself was great with my favorite part being the section through MM state forest. They had a good selection of chow at the lunch stops including fried chicken and a vegetarian line.
I'm already looking forward to next year.

Yeah, the hilly hundred was fantastic this year. Great weather and well organized, as always.
I took my son with me this year. He just turned 11, and has been riding for about a year. He did great... didn't have to walk one hill, and had an average speed of 13.8 on Saturday and 14 on Sunday. He spent most of his time trying to race tandems and talking trash to other young riders (I need to work on his group riding etiquette, but he was just trying to have fun).
We had a fantastic time... I'll be taking him again next year.
