Determined to be the last person in America to buy an Ipod, I just purchased a Sandisc Sansa Rhapsody MP3 player. I put all that I usually listen to on it and still have tons of space. Who is listening to what these days? Suggestions like Barry Manilow will be dealt with harshly.

I don't have any IPOD/MP3 or anyting. I do listen to the radio in the car though. 70's rocknroll station.

I won an iPod Nano in a contest last December. I've used it three times since then.

In fact, it is still running on its initial battery charge.

I have an iPod that hubby gave me for my 50th birthday. I tried to charge the battery one night when I had only a few minutes, then gave up and put it away.... and forgot where I put it for several months. (I think that officially qualifies me for the 50+ forum. :o) I finally found it when I looked in one spot for the 3rd time. I have favorite tunes on it which I downloaded from iTunes or ripped from CD.

I was filled with incredulity when confronted with a post called "For mature audiences only" authored by the one and only TWL. Until that shock wears off, I cannot respond to the actual question.

Excellent question, Tom. I think as time moves forward, the shock will wear off, which would mean he could post any replies he wants. I'm disappointed, of course, that he doesn't share a love of the man who IS the music -- the man who writes the songs:

I’ve been alive forever,
And I wrote the very first song.
I put the words and the melodies together,
I am music,
And I write the songs.

I write the songs that make the whole world sing.
I write the songs of love and special thing s.
I write the songs that make the young girls cry.
I write the songs, I write the songs.

My home lies deep within you,
And I’ve got my own place in your sole.
Now, when I look out through your eyes,
I’m you’g again, even though I’m very old.

Chorus

Oh my music makes you dance
And gives your spirit to take a chance,
And I wrote some rock ’n’ roll so you can move.
Music fills your heart,
Well, that’s a real fine place to start.
It’s from me it’s for you,
It’s from you, it’s from me,
It’s a world wide symphony.

LOL... I had a Shuffle that I was given as an 'attaboy' from my employer. The audio quality is not so good in my opinion... poor dynamic range, background hiss, distortion, etc. I gave it to my son and went back to my CD player.

I'm using a Creative Nomad MUV 256k player for over a year now. I think I have about 1 1/2 hour of music, which is enough that when it repeats I'm not aware. I ride with a spare battery, as there is no warning, player just stops when battery is dead. Today it died 5 minutes into ride but couldn't find my spare. Found it on the roof of the car when I returned from ride. Didn't do me any good there. Playing mostly 1970 and 1980 music. With faster beats to speed up my pedaling. O' I wish it were that easy. Although the Theme from Miami Vice TV show does perk me up.

That's a nice little mp3 player. Easy to load and use. I like that it will play wma files as well since I have a ton of them on my computer. I am one of those weird folks who still buy CD's instead of downloading individual tunes from the web.

Anyhow, I would like to recommend anything by Jerry Douglas. My favorite three albums are: Lookout For Hope, Slide Rule and Restless On the Farm.

We got a free iPod in the mail last year. Turned out to be a gift from our bank for opening a new account. It's still in its squeaky clean little hard plastic box in a drawer around here somewhere. I have no idea what to do with it. When I want to listen to music, I turn on the car or home sound system (i.e., "radio", "CD player"). To me it's like bottled water: I know people who must have it, but to me its use is still largely a mystery...

First thing I loaded on my unused iPod was about 50 Bob Dylan songs. Which is consistent with my signature.

The twins get shuttled off to school in two weeks. That means I again will be able to enter "The Den"
where our home computer resides. Imagine, accessing the internet from home instead of at work.
I've seen my kid's IPODS so I do know what they look like, but I'll just be thrilled to be able to use
my radio, CD player and Phono (YES PHONO) again. I think all that stuff is still in there too. The house is gonna rock 70's rock, jazz, blues, 50's and 60's oldies. Joplin, Outlaws, Cream, The Band...oh
the list just goes on and on. Vanilla Fudge, Santana, Stones, Doors...I wonder if they would object
to arriving at school a week early. Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Procol Harum.......

I, for one, LOVE my iPod. I have the video kind, and in airports or on planes it's great for watching Comedy Central podcasts.

I have 2,000 songs on it; the only trouble I seem to have is it likes to play the same things too frequently when it's in the shuffle mode. Fortunately, I heard about creating a playlist of songs that haven't been played in a certain time (say thirty days) and this seems to cure this problem.

But anyway, unlike a bunch of you above, I LOVE my iPod!

I used to have a cheapo Medion MP3 player from Lidl, it had the same charger as my Nokia phone and meant I only had to carry one charging cable on tours.

I preferred to "rip" full albums from my CD collection:-

Fleetwood Mac---Rumours
Bob Marley-------Exodus
Vivladi's Four Seasons
Led Zepplin.....

were among many other, very eclectic, albums on there.
songs I could belt out at the top of my voice in the middle of nowhere, brilliant.

Status Quo- John Lee hooker-Great number of Various Blues and Queen. Not a fan of queen but great for cadence up hills.

Me, too! I have a fairly old iPod mini. I mostly use it when walking for exercise--I have a 45 minute upbeat playlist on it--and on airplanes to drown out children, and back before I commuted by bike, on the metro to drown out the cell phone talkers. I've got a Christmas playlist I listen to while decorating the house and on the plane ride home every year.

Jimmy Buffett, Rod Stewart, the Eagles, Boz Scaggs, Eddy Grant, Jimmy Cliff, Eric Clapton, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John Denver, Leon Redbone, Louie Armstrong, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Seals & Crofts, Simon & Garfunkel, and yes, Barry Manilow...lots of 70's music by male singers :o.

I bought a Creative Zen this spring so I could ride my exercise bike in the garage without dying of boredom. This mp3 player lets you record directly from a CD player instead of fooling around with a computer. Sounds great, easy to use. Have Italian lessons, Laura Pausini & Nelly Furtado on it so far. Would put some Barry Manilow on but only have cassettes of him!!

Don't use it to ride out on the road because I like to hear birds singing, tires hissing, etc.

Me, too!

Our kids gave us each an iPod Nano for Christmas. In a month I had too much music on it. That forced me to create playlists, a handy tool for when I create ride profiles for my Spinning classes. Like many of you I have a wide variety of tunes -- Fleetwood Mac ("Penguin"), Cream, Joplin, Climax Blues Band, Roy Buchanan, Moby, Banco de Gaia, INXS, and so on. No Barely Maneough, but I do have some BeeGees. "Nights on Broadway" is a terrific hill climbing song.

Never use it on the road but it's a lifesaver for indoor training & podcast-listening when I engage in subcortical housewifey activities (aka ironing, weeding, cleaning, etc.).

I have a conversion program on my laptop so I can record LPs and tapes into my iTunes library. We have about 400 LPs, so I can go without buying music for a long, long time.

Love the iPod!

Good mix of songs, but leave that contraption at home when you ride your Serotta. It can take you to your happy place without electronic assistance. If you need music playing while you ride, you aren't getting what you could out of your riding. Kind of dangerous too (imho).

I have a wireless audio device that can download streaming audio providing random selections of music, as well as sports, and news reports. No computer is ever required nor is there ever a need to plug the device into a computer running propriety software required to activate the downloaded audio content. Some of these audio players have mass storage capability allowing the user to store streaming audio for later use with no limits or additional costs. These wireless audio devices are available everywhere at very low cost. There are no fees associated with the use of these audio devices.
Can you guess what this device is?

TWL,
Perhaps you could give us some additional direction other than vague threats of bodily harm for suggesting Barry Manilow! What kind of music can you see yourself listening to while riding??

Let me preface my remarks with this brief jeramiad: DG, neener neener you doo-doo brain.

This is a sample of what I have loaded on my MP3 player that I like:

Gretchen Wilson -- All Jacked Up.
Brad Paisley -- Ticks
Whiskey Falls -- Last Train Running.
Weather Report -- Birdland.
The Who -- Baba O'Reilly.
Talking Heads -- Once in a Lifetime.
Spiderbait -- Black Betty.
Porcupine Tree -- The Sound of Muzak.
Miriam Stockley -- Morte d'Arthur
Bach -- 6th Brandenburg Concerto.
And a ton of stuff by Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke.

The only problem with any of the above is I've listened to them a tad too much, so I'm looking for new blood.

Ah, TWL knows about Porcupine Tree ... excellent. I have three of their CDs. My favorite genre of music is progressive rock - I must own about 20 Yes CDs.

I'll second momof4's John Fogerty's suggestion. That whole live album of his, released upon his comeback of a few years ago, is excellent.

I love blues too, and blues-rock - I have two Allman Brothers CDs in my car for traveling music.

Unlike others here, I tend to listen to entire albums, or even multiple albums from an artist, rather than mix up playlists with a variety of singles. Once I get into the mood to listen to a certain artist, I like listening to an hour or two from them.

I've had a RIO 500 for years (129MB MMC card). I've recently tie-wrapped a set of battery powered speakers to my helmet and listen to audible books on the commute to work. Last week was Dune.
I get a few odd looks - and a lot of people I overtake know I'm coming. Some roadies get a little distraught when they can't seem to shake me but I'm not slowing down to accommodate them.

Bought an IPod for my Daughter for her birthday in April and thought I might pick one up for myself for working out and stationary bike time. I finally got around to shopping for my own last week, but when I was looking at them realized that I'm too out-of-date to use one...all the MP3's I looked at required Windows XP and I'm still operating Windows 98. When I mentioned this to the kid showing these MP3's to me he looked at me like I had just walked out of a cave wearing a loincloth. Sigh...
If I had one though, it would have blues, jazz, old rock n roll and classic country.

I have a small piece of hardware (a pre-amp, I assume) that allows me to plug my turntable and cassette deck into my computer. It was about $70 from DAK. It works great. Software is downloaded and includes a "depopper and dehisser" and an equalizer. It makes great digital music from your old analog stuff. I, too, have 400+ LPs and and as many cassettes, many of which I have converted.

I borrowed an iPod from ITS at the University a couple of years ago to develop a podcast program for the Dean. It sat in my desk at work for most of the year except to test the program and really didn't appeal to me as a music storage device since I couldn't stand the earbuds. Maybe it also was because it wasn't as user-friendly as I would have liked.

I have also become rather weary of contemporary pop, country, and "oldies' music that gets played over and over and over again. I have recently been listening to "unknown" indie bands and music that I find more stimulating than same-old rut "music" that music companies tend to force down our throats.

I find that the exploration and discovery of new bands on the Internet is much more fun than listening to Barry Manilow belt out Copacabana for the umteenth time. Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy.

That said, my iTunes library has 621 songs, 2 days and 6.14 GB of eclectic music ranging from everything to everything not.

Toughie. Porcupine Tree drew their inspiration from the 1970s Yes and Pink Floyd sound, and as a tribute, toured with Yes 2-3 years back. Another progressive rock group that some like is Spock's Beard. Wouldn't say they sound like Porky Tree, but is the same genre of music.

Others who like PT like Rush or Dream Theater.

And I've read some positive reviews of a group named Blackfield from people who like PT and Pink Floyd. Steven Wilson of PT also sings with Blackfield. But I've never heard any of their music. Now that I'm thinking of it, I should order a CD from them and check them out.

It's called Plus! Analog Recorder. You can buy it on the web for, I think, $15, and we just found out it's not available anymore. :( It was a Microsoft program now available through Vista. Go to microsoftdotcom and see what they tell you. (We still run XP and have no plans to upgrade.) Sorry about that.

We have some classical LPs recorded in Hungary in the 60s that you just can't get anywhere, and I can't wait to convert them.
