Classic & Vintage - High-end 80 to 90's French Road Bike ID

I've been riding this bike for a while but took into the local shop where one of the customers seemed really interested in the frame but didn't know what type it is. Aluminum w/ serial number 70304550 on the frame. The bike is aluminum without any other markings other than a sticker which says Made in France on the chainstay. Front chain ring is Biopace. Any guesses on what type of frame/bike this is?

Not a Vitus. Wrong seatstay and lugs. I think the winner is Alan.

Looks more like a a ALAN than a Vitus...but not like a typical ALAN, either...I'd guess something else, like a Raleigh Technium, perhaps, or a Univega...just guesses, but doubt I that it's French.

What's the deal with having two seatpost binder bolts? Am I seeing that right - there's a fastback as well as regular bolt? Never seen that before, but it seems like overkill. Sorry, but I can't offer any ideas about what kind of frame it is (thought I doubt Technium).

no. it's where the stays are attached (by bolts) to the seatlug, also bolted to the dropouts, that was a "feature" I saw on oddball aluminum Univegas but they still didn't look like this one. There WAS a short-lived Peugeot that was bonded aluminum (Galaxy?) and was recalled from the marketplace after bad frame failures...don't remember what they looked like to compare with this 'un. I agree it's probably not a Technium, I was just clutching...anybody think it might be a Samson? Or an SR/Prism?

1987 Peugeot Comete/Galaxie. Same frame but the Galaxie was a Shimano 105 equipted model while the Comete had Sachs/French stuff.

The official word on the recall was the Peugeot France wanted a release themselves of future liabilty after pulling out of the U.S. in 1989. I never saw or heard a failure. The shop I worked at handled most of the recall. I vividly remember clamping the rear dropouts in a vise and breaking them off before throwing them in the trash!!!

Yellow Jersey has the decals for the Comete.

Because I was little worried by the recall(thoughts of what might happen if the frame broke dancing in my head), so had the frame checked out at the local bike shop tonight. There opinion was that the frame was in good shape for quite a few more miles. Although the bike needs some work but here are some more pictures.

That Galaxie will polish up real nice.....
