Does anyone use a GPS when you tour? What do you suggest?

depends what you want to do. if your just sticking to the road you don't real need a GPS. besides a lot of the fun in touring IMHO is getting lost, asking directions and what not.

I have a Garmin etrex, fairly basic. Keeps you from getting ****ed, or so I hope, out in the middle of no where. heck I've ridden trails that I just hoped were going someplace in countrys where I spoke very little of the language, and done just fine with out a GPS. My next trip though, I don't think I will alway have the luxury of asking directions. hense the GPS.

I agree that for on-road touring, you don't need a GPS. I wouldn't advise replacing paper maps with a GPS, either. The GPS eats batteries. It's not always able to gain a signal. It takes a while to fix your location when you turn it on. And it can fall and break, unlike a paper map.

Having said that, you might find a GPS useful if you're going some distance from home on a tour. If you put the exact coordinates of chosen campsites along the way, markets, bike shops, etc., a GPS can replace a detailed, street-level map of small area in a city or a town. And where the maps are wrong, and they sometimes are, a GPS can help sort things out.

I use a Garmin Etrex legend with the Garmin handlebar mount when I use a GPS.
