The Neils on Wheels Bike Touring Team took on the 50 mile option at the Brandywine Bicycle Club's Dog Daze Century, held outside of West Chester, in rural Chester County. Check out that elevation profile! More than 2700 feet of climbing!

Neil F. once noted that he's faster than me, but I have greater strength and endurance. So it proved for much of the ride. Neil and I would alternately drop one another - he would pass me on the flats, and I would pass him going uphill. At one point I was about five minutes ahead of Neil, but he caught up to me. Despite my riding a road bike and Neil riding a mountain bike, our speeds were very close, and in fact we finished the final four or so miles together.
Fellow Bike Forums posters "freemti" and "uncadan8" also rode with the Neils on Wheels team. At least until they dropped us. :-(

Yes. He also wrote a tribute to his mountain bike tires. Go here:

The Continantal Toan and Country tires were a great help, although I'm still not sure if I'm keeping them.
Neil is without a doubt faster on the new bike, and I was pretty impressed by his hill climning stamina. (Eastern PA makes central NJ look like Kansas by comparison.) I ended up walking my bike up several hills.

I'll post an update when I re-record it with the revised lyrics. But I love the control you get with knobbies, they're just not good for commuting unless you have a lot of hills.

If I'm faster, how did you manage to catch up to me? I wasn't able to drop you. :-)

A 20" 2008 Trek 7.5 fx flat bar road bike, cherry red with white accents, and named Roark after the hero of The Fountainhead.

Congrats to Team Neil! :D Sounds like a heck of a good time, and a little friendly competition between the two of you. Competition never hurt anyone, right? :)

I'm definitely faster on the downhills - my bike was a downhill racer in a past life, I think.
If I'm faster, how did you manage to catch up to me? I wasn't able to drop you. :-)
Oh, yes you did on more than one occasion. In particular, the second rest stop. And anywhere it was hilly, you pretty much blew past me.

Yes, I blew past you over the hills, and then had to stop because the engine was overheating. And you caught up to me. As I knew you would. If I felt you wouldn't be able to catch up to me, I would have waited.
I'm sorry you thought I dropped you at the second rest stop. I needed to keep moving, otherwise I was going to call the SAG wagon. Staying around to watch you let air out of your back tire would have made it more likely I wouldn't finish.
Hey, can I be an honorary member of Team Neil? Pleeeeeze.

Sure. We were going to have tee shirts made at one time. There's a market for them here, I think. You are the fourth Neil posting to the Clydesdale/Athena forum.

You know, we get enough Neils geographically located in the right places, you guys could have a real couch surfing organization for long distance touring!;):D
