What would it take for the tour organizers to postpone a stage, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, fugitive manhunt, terrorist threat, German invasion (it is France :D), a gorilla escaping from a zoo, an alien attack...

Has this ever happened? Would they skip the stage or move everything back a day or two?

They've shortened stages and/or adjusted start time.

They've cancelled a few tours due to both wars.

I read where one stage (I forget the stage) was postponed/cancelled due to snow on the top of the col.

In 100 years there have only been 90 Tours. 1914-18 and 1939-45 were cancelled due to pressing engagements.:)

Stages are sometimes curtailed due to bad weather, e.g., the stage on which Miguel Indurain's fallibility was exposed by Bjarne Riis, after 5 dominant years, was such an event.

The fact that the Tour takes place in mid-summer helps, although torrential storms and occasional snows do inhibit matters from time to time. In the Giro D'Italia, stages are more regularly disrupted, because of it's earlier place in the calendar.
