View Full Version : Here is a hazzard you might not think about
Rabbits. Tonight on my way home from work a stupid rabbit jumped out of the tall grass right into the spokes of the front wheel on my bicycle. I am so lucky that I didn't go over the handle bars. Instead I came to a bumpy stop as the spokes ground his little body into chunks.

We had couple of cyclists get tagged by a deer the next county over a month or so ago. They were in a paceline that apparently was moving a pretty good clip and the deer jumped and caught the rear wheel:eek: I like to think it was an eco attack:D

Chipmunks chop up very easily as well and barely slow you down. Still messy though.:D

I've had that before near tall grass too - young rabbit jumped right under my front wheel, nothing I could do about it. Luckily for it I ran over its neck, so it died pretty quickly and didn't end up in small chunks.
Pics!!!
The best I can do is a couple of pics with rabbit fur on a spoke.

We had the same thing happen up here a month ago. A deer ran out right in front of a group of guys on a ride and made them crash

Glad you got the better of him. Tell me, does rabbit grue impair braking ability when you get it smeared all over your rims like that? ;)
Does rabbit go well with fava beans and a nice Chianti?
Oh, and I'm with Roody - pics or it didn't happen!
I had one scoot under my front tire a few weeks ago. Didn't hit it but came withing about an inch. I was worried about them going into the spokes so I'm glad to hear that spokes and forks will cut them up with little damage to the bike or rider.
That's no ordinary rabbit!!!!

another reason to ride bladed spokes - you can sharpen them

Don't sharpen the spokes. :( I have a few families of rabbits living on my property in the piles of debris that we got from the storms.
In a couple weeks I'm going to need my spiked ice tires though. Frogs and snakes freshly smooshed all over it is very slippery out there. I almost lost it last friday on a corner when I avoided two to hit a third.

I've come soooo close to this happening.....and I'm on the Proteus today, complete with Neuvation bladed spoked wheels.....I'm thinkin' I could cleanly slice a nice sized bunny with those.....

Near Traverse City? The same thing happened two years in a row. One guy was hurt very badly--like permanently disaboed, IIRC. Both guys were prominent in the local cycling community.
I had a deer growl and hiss at me the other day. It freaked me out in light of the two incidents above.
On my way into work I was able to take a camera phone pic of the deceased bunny.

In these situations, there is only one option. Ask yourself "WWLSD?"(What would Les Stroud do? (http://www.survivorman.ca/images/photos/plane2.jpg))
(DUW, and a bit icky--but SurvivorMan fans will get it)

A guy I know hit a skunk on a bike path at dusk. I've come really close to hitting skunks at night on the road.
You couldn't bunny hop it?

Never had a rabbit problem, but I did run over/hit my share of squirrels when I was commuting in CA. Most of them trying to impersonate the Geico commercial.

Rabbits have been a hazard here ever ince the city made it illegal to let your pet cat out without a leash. It's been like 5 or 6 years and it's hard to go a block without seeing a rabbit.
lol ive killed 3 squirrels one on mtb on a mtb trail crushed his head between front tire and small rock jump other 2 were on road bike one nose to tail hit other broad side.
I thought I was being paced by a medium sized dog in a residential neighborhood earlier this year. Turns out a coyote was running along side.
