Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - coming from a small city I didn't quite get all the "hipster" .....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

......**** giving so much.
but after a week in NYC I get it a bit more, even more so than LA and SF.
I saw a guy riding up Rivington st ,on the lower eastside of NYC, in super skinny jeans ,white, sleeveless shirt ,pink, white plastic aviator sunglasses, long mullety hair,........but the best part was the ankle dress boots with no toe clips or brakes

"give a hipster a brake" if not a least some toe straps and clips. WOW!

When I was out there over fourth of July, this seemed to be de rigueur for riding a fixed gear bike in New York. 'Not saying there aren't a lot of talented and strong riders, but it certainly seemed that the unskilled and unsafe novices outnumbered the responsible riders by orders of magnitude.

i'd take great offense to this post, but i'm too fat to be a hipster...

Although, in my experience, the only people who hate hipsters are hipsters themselves....

I understand why the OP had a problem with the way the guy was riding. It is kinda dumb, but there's no reason to criticize his fashion. Who cares if the guy wants to dress like an idiot....

it takes maturity to accept people as they are. you should be happy to see some variety. what's the alternative...hordes of people who all dress and act the same way? no thanks.

Very, very stupid. I've gone around with a few locals on this, and they seriously don't understand what's wrong with riding brakeless with platforms. A friend and I tried to get a guy to demonstrate his emergency stop, and he basically Fred-Flintstoned it, after attempting in vain to slow his bike with this meat-mashers. He ultimately came to a stop by turning sharply right and slamming his foot into the curb and basically leaping from the bicycle.

The thing I've noticed about these people is that they either seem to think you don't or you CAN'T run brakes on a fixed gear bike, but they don't know enough about bikes to think that all the way through.

I wouldn't have problems with hipsters out here in SF if they stopped giving me **** about having a brake on my fixie. I came here by way of single speed mountain bikes, you can pry my front brake from my cold dead hands.

Also I'm tired of 18 year olds on their first bikes lecturing me when I've been riding for over a decade, have had all kinds of bikes, and have seen all kinds of fads. I'm not telling them how to live their lives, where is the unjustified elitism coming from?

just out of curiosity, where/when/how do you experience this attitude from SF hipsters. i ride in the city all the time -- with TWO brakes -- and i never get made fun of.

I wear size 4 women's jeans, cut off just above the knee, exclusively vintage t-shirts and vans slides sans socks that coordinate with my blue faux ray-bans and military style cap, and find flat hair ties to be gentler on my mullet. I listen to a shuffle of The Blow, Girl Talk, A-trak and occasionally the Decembrists. I some-what despise being a hipster, but take pride in who I am. Though, most of all, I take pride in my record group Carlton that can smoke your big-city-high-horse-cycle any day of the week - all hail The Dresden Dolls.

I'm curious too. I had no idea that people get made fun of anywhere for running a brake. That just seems kind of sad.
