Classic & Vintage - Trek 420 - Help with Year and Value

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I found this for sale locally, and like the bike, but I'm not sure of the value. The seller is asking $275.00. Is this reasonable? The bike has been recently serviced, looks in good condition, and is ready to ride. I just don't want to overpay since this is a secondary bike to ride in the park with the kids.

Thanks in advance!

I paid $180 for one in better condition.

Frame appears to be an '85--crank appears to be different from original--does it have the Heliomatic hubs? (they can be prone to problems). Seems extremely steep to me--I recently picked up an original '85 520 for $20 minus pedals in as good as shape as what your pictures show--but pricing may be cheaper here. If it's a second bike, I'd wait for a better bike at a cheaper price.

I'm amazed that you can judge the condition of that bike based on those fuzzy little pictures.

Thanks for the info. IIRC, it is an '85 as it is a 15 speed. My instinct told me that the price was a little steep, but I do not know much about vintage bikes. I thought if it was smoking deal it would be nice to have a real cro-mo for the family bike.

I agree. Hard to tell the condition of the bike based on the pictures. If everything is in good shape then 150 to 200 bucks wouldn't be out of line. These are nice bikes.

I might be wrong, but i think that the 420 is not even chromoly. I believe the fork and stays are hi-ten and the frame is mangaloy. You would be well behooved to keep looking for a higher quality or less expensive bike. I bought my 520 for only $20.

the 85 420 had true temper chromoly frame (and stays) fork was hi-ten.

Given the era, and cyclist's attitudes at the time, I wouldn't be surprised if that was deliberate.

I think it's supposed to represent a road.
