Hi,

I was at the county dump about two weeks ago dumping and one of the workers there pulled an old bike out of the dumpster. It was in real nice shape and someone had thrown it away.

I took it home and oiled it up, pumped up the tires and I have been riding it every day. I have not had a bicycle for 38 years !

It is a Huffy WildWood. :) It goes faster every day ! :)

I feel like a kid again ! :)

Hi,

We're all kids again when we're on our bikes. It's one of those inimitable qualities that a bicycle has that stokes the childhood memories in us.

Glad you pulled one out of the fire. Happy cycling.

Hello biker, you are fortunate that your county worker allowed you to have the bike. A number of municipalities don't allow that (liability issues), but there's some great finds in town dumps (just take a look at the Classic & Vintage forum to see what I mean).

Welcome to BF!

Hi East Hill,

It was a big dumpster for metal only and it was almost full. I walked over there to throw some metal in and the county worker was pulling it out. It was a huge dumpster and if it had not been full the bike would have been lost. The worker was looking at it and I stopped too. I said it was a shame someone would throw away a nice bike like that. He said he saved a Schwinn from the dump a few weeks before and sold it for $200. I told him I thought the Huffy was a cool bike. It has skinny road tires with a coaster brake. He asked me if I wanted it and I said yes.
I took it home, aired up the tires, oiled the chain, regreased the bearings, adjusted the handlebars and seat and cleaned it up.

I checked and I think it was made in 1976

It has been about a month and a half. The first ride around the block kicked my but. Now I do it four times around the block !

On Labor Day my wife and I went to a park with nice paved bike trails and we rode for miles. We have been married for 33 years and this is the first time we ever did this. It was great !

That day at the dump changed my life !

That is a wonderful thing, Stephen :) . Sometimes I look back on my life and think about how different life is now that I get out there and ride my bike. Your rescue of the Huffy has changed you, and your world, for the better. Who would have thought that could happen?

By the way, if you've got photos of the Huffy to share, I'd love to see them :) .

Hi East Hill,

Many miles later :) Same tires. :) It's the one in the middle.

Thanks, Stephen

Thanks Stephen! That's a nice looking ride, and you've obviously done a great job recycling it :) .

Are you using this as a grocery getter? I'll bet you have a lot of fun riding that :D .
