i got a flat 2-3 miles downhill away from my apartment... I went over a manhole thing (wasnt even bumpy) and then i heard a loud pop, bike started getting shacky so i stopped lucky i didnt have my headphones in. Look at my front tire. it was super flat, then inspected it and i saw a little gash on the side. How embrassing not caring an extra tube to get me home.. i had to walk my bike home and carry it because i was afraid of damaging the rim.

My question is. Is the tire itself still usable? if it is how do i fix it? also is my rim damaged? i inspected the rim it looked fine.

Please help.

for reference: I have a bianchi pista 06 - about 50 miles on theses tires

thanks

No way to tell without seeing the tire/rim but if there is a 'gash' (which to me implies more than a little hole(spot?)) on the sidewall you run the risk of your tube blowing out of the tire. Can you post a picture?

The rim is probably fine.

step 1. Dig hole.
step 2. Put head in it.
step 3. Problem fixed.

Don't worry about wearing headphones, you'd have felt it. At least, you should.

If the chords are undamaged you are ok, but if the gash goes through the fabric your tire is junked..

a careful visual inspection of the other tire should suffice

Riding with headphones on is the Stupidest thing I see everyday. You're lucky you had your headphones off and got a flat. Could've had 'em on and gotten a truck.

Could have just been a pinch flat if you didn't put yr tube/tire on right the first time. Just give the tire a look-see, should be fine.

I think you may be on to something. Maybe on demand roadside service, you could start a biz in Gotham city catering to the young and the helpless.

My old shop started to do this just before I quit. If people flatted out on river road, they can call the new store and a car comes to either fix their flat or haul them back to the shop. They were going to start something similar in Central Park but the park department and "friends of CP" are leary of commercial traffic in the park.

Tire still usable? Most likely depending on how big the gash is. You can get a tire boot (Park Tool has some which are adhesive backed i believe) and put it in the tire to cover the gash.

Rim Damaged? Depending on how hard you hit the manhole, the rim may be fine, it may be out of true, and/or bent. Just spin the front wheel and see if it wobbles or if it's bent at the spot of impact. I killed a wheel once when it dropped through a gutter drain grate i was trying to hop over. Popped the tube and bent the wheel and braking surface. The LBS was able to get it mostly trued and rideable but there's probably not many miles left in it so the wheel has been retired.
