Touring - Robbed or Assaulted?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Has anyone on this forum ever been robbed or seriously assaulted (physically) while on a solo tour? I haven't heard many stories about actual life-threatening issues so I'm curious about how often it happens.
Never been robbed or seriously assaulted in 48 years, under any circumstance. My wife has toured alone on many occasions before we met, and never had any problem either.
I have been, though not while on tour. In broad daylight at a busy intersection in New Orleans, I was hit from behind on the head with a brick and knocked unconscious; woke up in the ambulance. The mugging was to steal my bike. My helmet saved my life, though I still have a crease in my skull. I mention this here, to point out that you don't have to be on tour to experience violence, so I don't think anyone touring should expect anything worse than what can occur in everyday life.

i was mugged the day before i left on tour last summer. fortunately wasn't hurt and the guy only scored $10, though i had just come from the ATM, where i took out a few hundred in cash for the ride.
i felt much safer in the hills of connecticut than the streets of brooklyn ;)

Yeah, I think the core thing is that people commit crimes. If your goal is to get away from people then your chances of getting robbed/mugged are much reduced. I've thought about carrying a "dummy stash" of $15 or so and a cancelled/expired credit card as something to give someone that mugged me -- assuming they didn't want the whole bike.

I was robbed in Lake Louise a few years ago - the cheapest accomodations in town were 125USD a night for a crummy room that should have been 50USD tops.

In a small Texas town, a kid stole my Halt dog spray. I hope he thought it was breath spray! Other than that, people have only been wonderful whenever I'm on my bike.

I've never been assaulted but I did run into one guy walking his bike into Quincy, FL eastbound along US 90 that said someone in a pick up truck had pushed him off the road.
Anyhow, always a smart idea of have a record of your personal information easily available in case you lose stuff (much more likely than being robbed).
