Looking for a pointer to where I can obtain some 27 x 1 1/4 tires with the dynamo strip on the sidewall.
All my LBS carries are the regular 27s with the gumwall sides, and I'm afraid the dynamo will just eat right thru these.
Anyone have a good source for theses tires?

Thanks

Probably the best you will get is blackwalls at your local hardware store. Yup - go to Fleet Farm if you have one in your area, and get the blackwall tire.

Actually, I don't think they make gumwall tires any more. What LOOKS like gumwalls are actuall not gumwalls, but standard tire material. In the old days, they put the vulcanized skin on the riding part of the tire, and then put gum rubber on the sidewalls. The reason was to provide a softer ride. I also heard from a bicycle engineer that the gumwall helped reduce energy loss through flexing of the tire, but I don't quit understand that science.

Anyway, there you have it. I also wish I could get 27" tires with the ribbing for the light dynamo.

IIRC, a 27" tire is likely to get called a "gumwall" tire if it has yellow or white rubber on the sidewalls. It's unusual to see 27" tires with black sidewalls.

But either type of rubber (black or light-color) sidewall should be fine with a dynamo. Just don't get one with no rubber, bare casing threads as the sidewall because they're probably slipperier.
