Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - fork threading

if you have a fork that's too long for your frame, is it possible to get it cut AND re-threaded? Or do you just have to go threadless?

you can definitely have the threads cut farther down on the steerer tube. you just need the correct thread cutting die. Good shops may have them, frame builders may too.

I don't know, i wanted to have it done a while ago and never got around to it.

not reeally you can get the thread die to do it yourself pertty dam cheap (30$at most ) just take you time when making the threads, i learnt that threading the outside of a tube properly is A LOT harder than tapping a hole to recive the threads, go slow, use oil, back it off every 1/2 turn then continue

I have the die and its not hard or that time consuming. but shop labor is always pretty expensive I guess.

1" threadless is kind of a pain. They shouldn't have to thread more than an inch, as it will be cut anyway. They may want to just run threads all the way down since starting threads on a bare steerer is kind of a beeyotch, but that's their problem for being lazy.

1" threadless is kind of a pain.How so? You can use any stem you want (1 1/8" or 1"), and you have the convenience of threadless.

OK, I wouldn't totally say it's a pain, they're not hard to find or anything, but there can be drama if you have a JIS frame and/or fork. Not a big deal, but doing a bunch of reaming and milling doesn't exactly solve the problem of frame and fork prep being pricey. If the whole thing is already ISO, I would agree with you that this is the OP's best option.

$40 per inch is pretty outrageous. I just had the threads extended about a centimeter and it was $12. Maybe he was quoting you for cutting a virgin fork tube (no threads whatsoever), which is pretty hard to do.
