BMX - Any women out there that race????

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I took my son out for his first race last weekend. Turned out to be a huge triple point Redline, blah, blah, blah. A bit much for his first day on a track, but we had a blast and he's into it. I'm happy to now know the in's and out's of Moto's, etc. The thing is, it was hard watching from the bleachers and not getting out there and riding.
Any women out there that race? Would love to hear your story. Or is this forum entirely male? Would settle for your stories about women...if you have them. :D
Thanks.

I thought about it...
Three females in my household race as of last month.

YEAH! Any cruisers? This is all new to me. All of the "older" women racing last weekend were on cruisers, but not sure if that's my style. Curious what you guys ride.
my wife's on a cruiser, yes. I got back into it and didn't do much research beforehand, so I thought I was limited to cruisers. Then I saw the men's open - all on 20" and all barely going fast enough to keep the bike from falling over. I **** you not someone had to be helped up a hill.
The guys on the cruisers were a lot faster, catching air and railing berms and whatnot.
My wife's currently recruiting a women's class so she doesn't have to race the guys. I'll keep you posted but so far there are already two ladies looking at cruisers.

"I **** you not someone had to be helped up a hill."
That is the funniest thing EVER. Since I've never ridden BMX - other than my kid's bikes to get from here or there - I shouldn't really comment. But all of the women on cruisers (all 3 of them) was just as painful as your experience it seems. Maybe I'm in for a harsh reality, but they were going SO SLOW. I'll be racing cyclocross for the first time next month...I think I'll wait for that season to end before I give another sport a try...but that course looks like so much fun!!! Good luck to your wife!

Did you see any of the girls race at the Redline Cup?! Some of them are amazing. I know there are a lot of really good girl racers out there such as Alise Post, Shelbi Long, and a girl I actually know, Liz Passwaters.

There aren't many women who post here (I'm one), but I don't race. I think that if I had been brought up in a bike riding household I would have been out there racing, though. I would not have been much of a road racer, but I think that BMX or MTB would have suited me.
I never thought of myself as that competitive, but it turns out that I am, actually.

There's a girl who races here, in the same division as the boys her age, she's pretty good. Better than I would be I'm sure..
Actually, come to think of it, there are a few, but there's one who's good :p
in the NBL the girls can choose to race boys or girls. If they race boys they can change their mind at any time and go over to girls, but not vice-versa. my 11 yo is racing girls and the 9 yo went boys.

I saw a lot of the girls race, but I didn't catch many names. Only those with parents sitting around us. And we didn't stay for the Main (schoolnight yah know). So I didn't see who won the events. The girls were a lot of fun to watch. The little ones were so tough on their bikes, then you'd see them walking around with bows in their hair all girl'd up again. I love that!

The few times i've been to my local track there have been a handful of girls racing or practicing.
Some of them were pretty fast too!

I was told the younger girls are faster than the boys because they develop so much faster at that age, which is true in most sports. As we all know, it isn't long before the boys take off and dominate. But it's fun to watch the girls blowing past the boys while they can.
When I raced in Australia, my old boss got tired of taking her kids to the track and just watching them. So she got herself a cruiser, and started racing. She sucked badly, but had fun. There were some girls out there that absolutely killed it. Lucky for me, I was racing in the Masters, and didn't have to go up against girls 20 years younger than me. I would have gotten spanked, and not in a good way.
By the way, I got my wife a cruiser, along with a matching jersey and helmet. While she liked to ride, she never raced.

I raced 20" for a bit. Only i sucked on the start gate. The ladies i raced against were all nearly 10 years older than me and fast as hell. I've never seen a 35 year old chick jump so far! Most the chicks seem to be either really young or vets, not much in between so I ended up racing the former state champ. She'd just come back from having a baby and kicked my ass. So uncool...

There are so many things that are wrong, funny and womanizing i could say about what you just wrote, but something is holding me back.

At least until the 29th. I'm having surgery again on the aforementioned date.

I'd be getting surgery in September sometime if it weren't for a random opening. So I found out today that I'm getting surgery next week.

So when you broke your leg did you get a metal rods and screws?

Screws. I would have gotten a metal rod as well, but I'm not done growing so they didn't put it in.

Ah I new someone who got the metal rod and screws from blading and it hurt really bad or something like that so they took it out.

Nicee. That would totally suck to have a metal rod put in your leg.

It would, and it's some intense piece of metal. She got to keep it after they took it out.

Cool. If I ever have some kind of surgery(which I hope I never have to) I definitely want to keep what they took out of me.

I probably will be keeping what they take out. I can mount it on my wall. Haha.

You should use a screw to put up a poster of a bmxer. Sweet.
My uncle got his leg crushed pretty bad in an accident on his Harley. His friend was checking out all the stainless screws and titanium rods that held his leg together while it healed. Finally, he just said "You could probably use that on your next bike when they take it out".

As cool as that may sound, the screws are way too big. They'd probably go through the walls into the next room.

You either have really thin walls or really long screws. I thought they keep them in forever unless you're having problems with them.

That would be why I'm getting them removed- they bother me.
P.S. Expat, that's actually a good idea. You could then almost say the bike is a part of you...

Oh trust me, there are some things you really don't want to keep. The drains they use to keep lymph draining...the drains they use to other fluids draining :p . Drains are nasty.

After reading some of the experiences here from the guys--I think I will just ride for the fun of it, and leave the racing to those who have bones which would heal faster than mine :p .
