I will be visiting Chicago and was wondering if the Fox River Trail from Aurora to Crystal Lke is a paved trail? THANKS, Ron T.

Most of it is paved. There are some sections on the southern end that are limestone. However, there are others who live closer to it that can give you a more detailed description.

Yes it is. There are a few small secitons that are more hard pack dirt/gravel, but they aren't long and can easily be ridden with a road bike.

I ride the trail from Elgin to Aurora during my commute. You can also ride the trail North of Crystal Lake and into Wisconsin - FYI

There are some sections where some surface streets are used, and the trail is not very well marked. If you have a good idea of when and where one of us might be able to meet up with you, or at least we would be able to give you specifics about how to follow the trail....St Charles is kind of a good example of that....

The trail is paved all way to McHenry and even further north. As mentioned above, there is a short section between Elgin and St.Charles that is not paved ( about a mile or less).

You can read trail description and how it connects to other regional trails here:

Thanks so much to all for the information and the link (the Virgil Gilman trail sounds like a beauty too...we'll see). I would also like to make it into Chicago and ride the Lakefront Trail. THANKS again to all. RT StL, MO
