It's time for the Bicycle Touring Club of N. Jersey's annual event on Sunday August 26th. The routes are all new, the rest stops will be well stocked, and it really is great riding. Here are the details if anyone can join me there:

Choose from six beautiful, well-marked routes - 12, 25, 45, 62, 100 and 125 miles. These are rider-tested routes. The emphasis is on the enjoying the ride and the scenery. The 12-mile route is designed for beginners and families. The 25- and 45-mile routes are rolling. The rolling 62- and 100-mile routes head Southwest through the Splitrock Reservoir area as well as into the greenery along miles of the Black River Wildlife management Area with the turn-around for the century (100) in Chester NJ. For those stronger riders looking for a challenge, we are offering a 25 mile hilly extension to the century for a double metric (125) — a climb up Schooley’s Mountain - along the ridge - and a rewarding downhill. Escorted rides will leave at pre-determined times on Rally morning for all ride levels. Whichever you choose, you'll love the company, well marked routes, rest stops stocked with fruit and home-baked goodies, and the views!.

Brooklyn Rider and I did the metric century. The weather was just about perfect: The sun stayed behind the clouds, the rain held off, and the humidity was low.

We left the Campgaw Mountain Ski Area at 8 AM, and started out slowly in order to get warmed up and have something left for the end of the ride. The beginning of the ride had a lot of turns, and we missed a couple. The course was really well marked, and as soon as we got used to looking for our green marks to indicate the 62 mile ride turns, we didn't miss any more.

At about mile 19, there was a long and steady uphill. We joined the 45 mile B ride and spun our way up the long hill. This took us to the first rest area. We ate some sandwiches and made the long trek to the bathrooms. After the rest area, we met up with the 65 mile B ride and ride out the last 40 miles with them.

The ride leader kept us at the steady 18 mph pace, and we kept a decent line, so the pace was easier to hold up. We rode along to second rest stop at 40 miles, and ate some more sandwiches (PB & J). After the rest area, the ride for much more hilly. We hit some of the hills pretty hard going 18-20 mph up the hills. The other riders really did a great job sharing the pulling up the hills.

We cruised in to the end, and then regrouped about a mile before the finish, so that we could finish as a group. The overall average was 15.4 mph, including the slow start and slow downs for lights and traffic. Pretty good average for a B ride. Thanks to the leaders for holding a good pace.

Overall, this was a great ride, and I would be happy to do it again next year.
