That's the Zaca Lake fire that started on 4-July. Just north of Santa Barbara on the other side of the hill (what else is Zaca Lake famous for? Think '80s movie). It's burned over 101,000 acres so far with 40% containment. They're saying it's gonna take another month to get it under control. By that point, it's going to have consumed a larger land-area than Los Angeles!!!

The sun is gone here. It left 25 minutes ago (completely).

It isn't supposed to set for another 25 :(

Run to the Valleys doesn't have quite the same ring does it? :)

I see California is now experiencing what we Georgians were experiencing earlier this year.
I think we have something close to 800,000 charred acres in the state now.
And if it doesn't start raining soon, there'll probably be more.

No news on TV or the paper about this mushroom cloud at all!!! Just little snippets about the progress of the fire and how many acres burnt, very odd...

What I want to know is, "what caused it?" It would seem that such a cloud would be caused by a huge amount of combustible material going off all at once. Like an explosion or a volcano opening up. A huge forest fire would consume trees at a fairly constant rate and send up a steady column of smoke. For this cloud to occur, you'd think someone dumped an extra 50,000 trees on the pyre and it all went up at once... Very odd...

Here is a little smoke cloud from last week. This one is too the west and is by FAR the smallest. We have them to the south and east as well.

Maybe it's a water vapor cloud from a huge amount of water added to a very hot, clean-burning fire?

maybe W decided that the fire was a terrorist organization and tried to drop a very very tiny nuke on it.
