Pantani did it with a kilo of Coke in his jersey pocket.

Pantani - The Legend. I'm still sad he's gone. :(

I think LA did say "No more gifts" after that stage. But that may have been LA's way of playing mind games

Could Lance have won that stage? Who knows. Could Lance have gone harder at the end? Yep. He clearly slowed up at the end.

I will agree Lance did seem to let up in the end.

Lances EPO ran out before Pantani's coke.

That was Stage 17 in the 2004 (pantani was already deceased) Tour when he beat Kloden.

I believe he said it in one of his books that he gave it to the Pantani, and the pirate was pissed off afterwards

so you don't have an opinion, then?

if you are getting beaten and your ego is so huge that you want others to believe that you gave a stage away you might let up a bit.

i started losing respect for armstrong about this time because he acted like such a baby. miguel indurain would have never been caught up in such a petty exchange.

If he did or didn't gift it doesn't really matter; making the comment that is was a gift is classless.

I think Bernard Hinault said "pas de cadeau" in 2005 when Armstrong beat Basso after the second mountain stage when in the sprint.

It was him beating Kloden in 04.

Yes it was, my mistake.

But i also think he was asked at the presconference inmmidiatly after that stage and said that he gave it to pantani.

But in anycase i think it's unrelated to the Pantani incident.

Personally i think Armstrong was stronger and gave it away

At one point he signals to pantani to stay behind him, but he could have been bluffing.

Definitely, YES ! But it's a non issue, as those 2 didn't even sprint for the victory. Pantani was in the front, Armstrong left the peloton (or what was left of it) to join Pantani, he overtook him and said: "Follow me."

All was said, stage victory for Pantani, yellow jersey for Armstrong. They didn't fight for the victory. For those who did see it, here the link to a 16 minute French programme about Pantani.

Scroll forward to the 13th - 14th minute, you'll see the end of that famous stage.

What is a lack of class is afterwards to say: "I offered him the victory." Too easy, how can he tell, he didn't even try. That's tasteless!

Have a nice day
