A person I am close to says this to me on fairly frequent basis...I know I hate hearing it.

Nope, can't say I've said that... I've disliked some *aspects* of it, but can't imagine hating it. What does this person mean? Is there some part of his/her life that is truly awful, or is s/he just complaining to get attention? If there is something terrible, what steps can he/she take to resolve the problem?

I think some people will find a way to be unhappy no matter what their circumstances.

Sometimes it's good to vent and confide in your friends about your troubles, but I don't think it's useful to whine about stuff all the time, trying to convince yourself and the people around you how bad you have it.

When I have a bad day say fighting with the wife and the job sucks and you feel like chucking it all, I just step back and remember that my family and I are healthy and really if you have your health everything else passes in time.

I said that a number of times since my husband died. But it's been a while. I think about May or June was the last time I said this....

I've said, but don't think I really meant it at the time.
But it was a bad time in my life and I would not want to relive that period if I could avoid doing so.
Having said that, I guess I would not be the person I am today without that period in my life.

Couple of people around me are constantly saying that along with the "Is it 5 yet?", "Is it Friday yet?" and living also with a person who constantly sighs ... it really can be annoying.

There are points in my life I've said it, but only because circumstances were making my life suck. But, I knew if I just toughed it out, things would get better, and they have.

If I'm stuck in a particularly cruddy situation, I've been known to voice my dislike for it. Like right now, I'm in limbo waiting to transfer to the next station in life and it just seems so far away (18 days!). I just keep doing what I'm doing, though.

More or less daily, yeah. But I just don't trouble others with it.

I used to before my brother died. At the funeral I realized how pointless and self involved my incessant whining was. Later that day I resolved to fix what annoyed me.
Trials still come and go. I may briefly start feeling that life does suck but I tend to bounce back once the issue is resolved.

Only to myself.
I decided long ago that I was going to live out life just to see how sucky it would get for me and the world. Make sure not to complain about it to others and try and see how much I could take.
Then I read the book of Job.. they stole my idea damnit! well sort of :(:D

I've been through a couple of lifes bumps that made me feel that way for long periods of time. And I have days now that I feel that way for no identifiable reason. But I don't bother anyone else with it, I just deal with it.

A long time ago...I dug myself into a nice little rut full of hell and pain. Honestly, I was a very pissed off, very depressed individual. The end problem was life wasn't challenging enough for me at that point in my life.

I found a few ways to make it more interesting though :)

+1. Every single religion has a prohibition, and something that will happen that is really nasty, possibly forever, to the person who commits suicide. Christians have Hell, Islam (from what I know) will have the person re-enact the moment of his/her death for eternity, Hindus believe the person will be reincarnated as a lesser being, etc.

Yep, and glad I've been through it because it makes me appreciate how wonderful life is now.

Though to be honest, from my pov someone who so vocally whines about it (I mean those who don't have an obvious reason) does it more because of lack of perspective and the trip of being morose around others.

Sometimes it can take a life-changing experience for one to get some focus. But self-improvement is a b!tch and if your friend really wants to have a happier life, then perhaps best to focus on not being miserable.

If you are really adamant about making your life suck, shouldn't you be happy that you are good at something?
