I was looking at plotting out a variant of the Pie Ride route to avoid the drastically sucky, dangerous and shoulderless Lake Wohlford Rd climb. Looking at Bikely it would appear that Old Guejito Grade Road might be a decent alternative, but I have never driven or ridden that road. Anyone have any insights?

how about just putting wohlford at the start of the ride so there's no traffic.

eVil...pure evil....but you're right. Having the start at, say, Kit Carson Park, then up Bear Valley to L. Wohlford...the return would be the 78 West and a nice, quick drop back to Kit Carson on Bear Valley.
Also, Dan...looking at satellite shots, I don't think Old Guejito is paved all the way. Pretty sure it was the old horse and wagon trail before they carved out L. Wohlford road.

ps. If you put Wohlford at the beginning, you'd have nearly 8,000' of climbing in the first 60 miles...and only 1,000 in the last 40.
/actually doesn't sound too bad.
*edit...if there's an Observatory out-and-back, just getting to the observatory is 7,300' of climbing in 36 miles.
