I posed a question (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31034) about a month ago seeking help to silence a creak when pressure (cranking out of the saddle, usually) was applied to the front Rolf (the Trek models) wheels/carbon fork combo - the creaking was not due to the spinning motion, but apparently, from the sideways pressure. I am posting this for the benefit of any future searches of the archives (does anyone actually search these?) because I have a solution and I'd like to help anyone with similar Rolf trouble.

My initial solution was to remove the front wheel, remove the axle endcaps, apply a bit of grease between the axle and cap, then reassemble and replace the wheel. This would only last about a day. This weekend, an LBS mechanic mentioned to me something about the cause being some sort of rubbing on an internal flange, blah, blah, blah (I didn't pay much attention) and suggested that servicing the cartridge bearings would fix the creak. He was right! Just remove the bearings, clean and either repack/replace as needed. Voila! No more creaking for two days now. I'm quite pleased.

Also, if you don't have or can't find the tool for the notched nut, a red handled, Park pin spanner works as a good substitute.
