I think it would be fun. Maybe I can get the Miss's to cook up her oatmeal, flaxseed, blueberry cookies, right out of Chris Carmichael's training book.

Saaaay, I could learn to like you (and the missus)...

Hey, not to sound like I haven't been paying attention, but what was the final decision on start time, where are people meeting, etc?
9 am in the parking lot by Chain Reaction. There's also a Peet's Coffee there, so you can get your caffeine boost there too. Also, check out the OP (Original Post).

There was a question in another topic about shorter routes for this ride.
I just quickly mapped out a couple of possible options for shorter loops.
The main route is about 56 miles, 5600'.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Big-Basin-Skyline-Kings-Mtn-Loop
If you take Page Mill down off of Skyline to Altamont and that back to Foothill, it looks like 33 miles, 4800'.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Big-Basin-Skyline-Page-Mill-loop
If you cut off of 9 at Redwood Gulch, you can take that to Stevens Canyon and take that back to the start.
18 miles, 3000'.

As in you'd be racing in it?
I might be heading up to the city after the ride. My friend's hubby is racing at 3pm. so it should be ok.

Thanks for posting the shorter options, #2 is enticing for me, I've been a maybe because of time constraints, #2 shorter ride might work. And it's still a completely new ride for me, I don't think I've done any of it before, except maybe the Foothill Expwy part.

Oh I've got tons of routes in my head ... this is just one that I took the time to plot out on bikely. Just be glad I didn't take the route UP Redwood Gulch.

Oh, jeeez - been there, done that. You have to use the 15% sections to recover. Good thing the scenery was nice, because I had plenty of time to enjoy it on the way up.

You're supposed to go UP Redwood Gulch, not down:eek:
Seriously, this is a very steep and technical descent.

Spin - scratch me from the list please... my wife just booked the whole weekend in Monterey. So I'll be doing the family thing. I'll have to catch you guys later in the month, hopefully the Santa Cruz ride!

I'm going to ride this for the first time after work today. We'll see how much a lighter bike helps with the steep stuff. I did HW 9 on Monday, took about 44 min from the concrete bridge just after Pierce to Skyline. I don't want to get droped too badly on Monday's ride.
Did we ever determine the length of this ride? Is it 35-ish, or is it 60something, or do ppl just bail as they see fit off 1) RW Gulch 2) Page Mill 3) OLH 4) 84 or 5) Kings Mtn and make up their own mileage?

If you take it easy, it's not that bad, although Terry Morse said someone busted up their kidney in a crash coming down it once.

Dude, plan something on the weekend with the wife. I felt guilty too so I'm taking the wife and kids to a picnic this weekend to negate me riding on Monday.;)

Depends on whether my family persuades me to BBQ a brisket on Monday. The pitmaster isn't allowed to leave the premises while BBQing.

Made it up it tonight with one rest stop near the last right turn before the one lane section. It's harder than Moody but not as bad as Quimby. Talk about creepy, that x-files section with the abandoned vehicles.

Yea, the last time I went up Redwood Gulch was on the way over to Big Basin. It was supposed to be a social lazy Sunday ride ... but it turned into a 81 mile ride with 8,000 feet climbing!!!

If we do the original route, it's 55-60-ish. But if anyone wants to cut off early, or take short-cuts, it's fine with me ... just let someone know if you do.

So depending on how I'm feeling, I'm thinking I might ride there from home (21 miles) and then catch a lift home with someone afterwards.

I just want to make it clear that the ride will start at ChainReaction at Los Altos at 9:00 am, right?

So if I show up at the Chain Reaction in Redwood City at 9:00, or the Los Altos store at 9:30, I'm SOL, right? ;)
I'm thinking I'll tempt the family with ribs instead - they only take 3 hours in the heat and smoke....
So if I show up at the Chain Reaction in Redwood City at 9:00, or the Los Altos store at 9:30, I'm SOL, right?
If you're at the RWC store at 9:00, I'd probably make a beeline for Page Mill and start climbing. ;)

But I'll gas up the car anyways, just in case.;)

We may need to alter this ride on Monday if the fire persists. We'll have to play it by ear on Sunday.
should we start talking about alternative routes? just incase. get some ideas flowing.

I'm not really sure exactly where the fire is. I heard there was a sig alert somewhere on Redwood Gulch. I have some other ideas too ... perhaps Old La Honda, and some hills near Redwood City? I'll have to check by Sunday, and modify accordingly.

So it is on the route ... damn! May have to re-route around Montebello, no Mt. Eden ... :(
Here's a map (http://www.mercurynews.com/portlet/article/html/imageDisplay.jsp?contentItemRelationshipId=1637984) of the fire. It would appear that the closest we would come to the fire would be the stretch along Montebello Rd to the junction of Stevens Canyon & Mt Eden Rd. 'Seems like we should be OK for the ride, and I'm sure more than a few of us will be taking scouting trips out there between now and Monday to ensure that the route is a good one. Containment is expected to be by tonight, so hopefully we won't have to make any changes.

One of the things I LOVE about riding on the Peninsula - there's always another route.
