I think one of my riding buddies, Kunal, is probably going to join us, hope that's ok. Fingers crossed for no fire detours.

Just came back from a ride. I decided to head down Stevens Canyon, just to take a look. There were some choppers grabbing buckets of water from the reservoir. I was able to go pass Montebello, but they did close off all parking lots and parks close to the reservoir. So it appears we should be okay. I asked a park ranger, and he said going through Mt. Eden shouldn't be a problem, but wasn't sure about Redwood Gulch.

Nice shot of the helicopter. I think I can see Robert Duvall in one of the windows.

Redwood Gulch is a non-issue; I just got home via 9>RW Gulch>Stevens Canyon>Mt Eden>Pierce>DeAnza and I didn't see any reason to alter the original route. The best view of the fire as near as I could tell was coming down RW Gulch before the hairpin. The fire appeared to be further up the canyon by Grizzly Flat.

Great ... thanks for the report. Then it's onwards for the ride!

Spingineer, nice picture! Those helicopters are pretty bad-***** .. saw one up close and personal near Sacramento once. It actually had a hose that it would lower and then pump water up into a tank inside the helicopter. Each fill-up took about a minute and then it would swoop dramatically over to the brush fire a few hundred yards away and dump the water. I got to see about a dozen iterations of this process and it was fascinating. That's got to take a lot of skill for the pilot to hover low over the water while the weight of the aircraft is getting heavier due to all that water.

Anyway I'd like to join the ride but not sure how my weekend plans will pan out yet. Put me down for a definite maybe :)

Ron,

Is there anything comparable to Tunitas Creek Rd on this ride?

I don't think so ... climb up Hwy 9 is long, but not really that bad.

A few years back, there was a brushfire on Mount San Bruno, right near 101. From my office, you could see the fire. One of those helicopters with the bucket was flying out to the inlet by Oyster Point to refill, then flying up to the fire.

You'd see him fly up there, and dump, and from my vantage point, it looked like he'd missed by dozens of yards. But each time, FOOSH! and out went another 100 yards of the fireline.

I guess he knew where he was better than I did.

I saw on the news where a DC-10 (I might have the wrong plane) too a load of fire repellent, and dump it on the fire ... but they let go the hatch a little too early. Some of the ranger jeeps got covered with that stuff. Ooops!

This is too good to pass up. Family plans changed for the wknd - so I just caught up on this topic..

taxi777 as SAG (and photographer)? I love it. We nearly met the last time I rode in SF by GG Park. This sounds like the ride in which to throw myself into the deep end. Last organized bike event = 15 yrs ago.

..with my (..let's see what I've learned from BF in the last few months..) gas-pipe-framed boat-anchor - '67 Varsity - the ascents ought to be fun/painful. The first one ready to peel off and take a "detour round the hill" - do let me know.

Spingineer - what are the numbers at this point? Pretty impressive I would think - nice job!

BlastRadius - my jersey will probably be at your doorstep when you return (1st re-order) - story of my life.

msincredible - did I spy some Cannondale Roams in a Falafel Ride pic? I'm hoping to find a pair before the ride.

backinthesaddle - you have a challenger.

ride on,

-Frank

So excited.

The numbers ... so far, it looks like 20, with 6 maybes ... and that doesn't include those that may tag along. This is going to be a terrific event. Don't miss out on this one!

Of course ... it wouldn't be a BF ride without any cameras ... expect at least 3 or 4 cameras ... and be prepared to have your picture taken!

I'm confirmed for the ride by the wife. Yes!:D

I can't wait to meet you guys. This will be my first BF ride.

I'll probably bring a camera too.

BTW, I might also have a fried coming with me.

Argh - I might be coming down with something, I was really tired on my last 2 rides.

So I'm going to play it by ear on Monday, and if I do come along, I might just go as far as Page Mill and head back down from there*. Sounds like a great ride is brewing, I'd hate to miss it entirely !

(* and conveniently arrive back in time for the Carvell to open :D )

Jo,
If it's as hot as it was today, I think you'll have some people joining you going down Page Mill. That's what happened on the 4th of July ride ... most of us went down on Page Mill.

No kidding. I'm on the fence with this one. I have the time and the inclination, but I did 30 miles today and it's egg-frying weather over here by Diablo. 102 degrees last time I checked.

Not sure if I wanna drive all the way over there just for heat stroke. :D

Tomorrow will be madness on the bridges/ add the heat and trying to get back to the east bay...I think staying home and watching the Twilight Zone marathon would be my choice. I've made plans to stay on the pennisula all day and early evening. My wife and I are going out for dinner in half moon bay and coming back late, and all coastal.
BTW just picked up the ice and stuff for cookies, so we'll try to be there before 9:am.
I'll come down 280, should I get off at foothill and north to Grant?

Yeap, and stay to your right.. You'll see Chevron. Turn there and follow the parking lot past Trader Joes, Chain Reaction is on the far side in the right corner.

Not being familiar with the area, should I/we be checking the weather for Los Altos or is there a better, more appropriate, location to check? I'm seeing temperature forecasts for low to mid 80's. Does this sound about right?

"Sunny. Highs in the lower 80s to mid 90s. West winds 5 to 15 mph."

The ballpark it. They can only narrow it down to around 10 degrees, so it could be anywhere from 83 to 95. I'd bet on 95.

well gang, I think I'm moving from a maybe to a no show. went out for short training rides yesterday and today, ended up exhausted and slept the afternoon. there was some bug going around my office last week, I think I must have a light dose of it, don't want to push myself any more.

enjoy yourselves, and take lots of pictures!

At 3 pm, my car showed outside temp of 91 (if you wanna believe that). Depending on how everyone feels, we'll do like we did last time ... bail out points include going down either Page Mill, or Hwy 84 ... I'll bring some route slips in case someone wants it.

I find that these 90+ deg rides are enjoyable if there are spots along the way to soak your head w/ H2O. Perhaps we'll all just be riding from garden hose to garden hose. :p

Every time I see a hose in someone's front yard I think about that, but then I remember how they'd probably get kinda pissed if I helped myself.

I checked a thermometer at around 3pm and it read one hundred and friggin' two over here in the Diablo Valley. Hotter out towards Livermore.

91 would seem downright chilly right now..........
