Road Bike Racing - what's new on Landis? anything?

I've looked around a bit and haven't found any updates. The last I heard was quite a while ago when there was talk of an announcement prior to the TdF. Has anyone hear anything? Why the delay?

yeah, I checked there and nothing since the 8th.

Just guessing but I think they're imposing a forced suspension on him this way. The longer the case takes, the longer he can't ride. If they keep this up, their decision won't matter - he'll be at two years anyways.

The last piece on the subject from Cycling news (http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=features/2007/landis_hearing_day10_07) stated: "Any result from the arbitration hearing, which ended on May 23, may not be known for up to six weeks."

That was 11 weeks ago. I'm glad my future doesn't hinge on USADA to make a decision.

If this is an unofficial suspension then USADA is a joke of an organization and the fact that we fund them with tax dollars makes me feel dirty. The announcement IS NOT dependent on whatever Landis is doing. He must, like defendants, await his verdict passively. It is surprising that USADA hasn't addressed the issue and that the sports news people (cycling specific and general sports news) haven't questioned the delay openly as far as i can tell.

You know he spent just about every dollar of his on his defense, so his salary is this book.

Any way to estimate how much he may be making from this?If you have seven books on the bestseller list (if, in fact, you do so well that the NYT list makes new rules to keep you in the children's section) with three or four in the top ten simultaneously over a period of years, you become a billionaire. If you have one book that stays up for a few weeks, you make a nice annual salary for that year, but nothing like what an un-lawsuit-hogtied Tour de France winner can earn in endorsements.

I'm not sure what the fiction vs. nonfiction split is, though - they're not judged against each other.

I'm pretty sure the really rich authors are on the fiction side (Rowling, King, Grisham, Brown, Clancy, etc.). The rich non-fiction authors are usually the self-help folks who also run an associated empire of things-to-buy. This makes me wonder if the ladies who wrote 'The Joy of Cooking' got rich--their book has been in print for over 40 years! Which is probably about 39 years longer than Floyd's book will be in print... :(

LOL, I actually use that cookbook once in a while and when looking for something the other day I noticed that they had a recipe for cooking muskrat (as well as beaver tail)!!

It's a wonderful basic reference.

Their son/grandson certainly has made a ton on it - he keeps revising it and raking in the cash!

Stephen Ambrose (Band of Brothers and a slew of other great history -mostly WWII - books) must have done alright.

Authors usually make next to nothing on their first book that hits big. They get an advance and very little money for each book sold. However, if they're well known like Landis, they can cut a better deal.

As an author, I'll tell you: the advance is rarely over $50K and 3-5$ of the book price of a $25 book. But advances are advances of anticipated sales, so at $5 a book, you need to sell 10,000 just to meet the advance, or no other money comes in. Where authors get rich is in very long selling books (i.e. not this one), or with TV or movie deals (unlikely).

They had good squirrel recipes and instructions on how to skin a squirrel. However, they removed all this in later editions to edit out all cute animals.

Yep, the one I have is 30 years old. Never have tried those varmint recipes!

And I don't even care about the Landis case anymore. It's ridiculous that it's gone on this long. Someday, my VeloNews RSS feed will show the result and i'll have a quick yay or boo moment, and then it will be done.

I looked it up in the index, where it comes right between squid and stain removal...hmmm, given squid ink you'd think those two should go together.
