General Cycling Discussion - Recommendations for good LBS in San Jose/South Bay?

Hi, Does anyone from the Bay Area have any recommendations for good bike shop in San Jose/South Bay area? i.e. somewhere that's good for tune up/repair work etc. and doesn't overcharge.

I like the way Palo Alto Bicycles has their shop set up. It's my favorite shop. Other than that, we do our own maintenance, so I can't really help you with the fees, sorry. :(

I forgot Bicycle Outfitters in Los Altos, off Foothill and Fremont. They got a whole half of their building set up for their service shop. Really impressive.

Thanks Chi for the suggestions, I will keep them in mind. I just busted a spoke over the weekend so I ended up today checking out the closest bike shop to where I live - Bicycle Express on William St. in San Jose. It's just a small shop, mostly repair, they sell a few mtn. bikes. They are nice guys so I will probably take my bike there for a tune up.

Bicycle Outfitters seems nice, although I've never had repairs done there. Chain Reaction is right down the street (Foothill) from Bicycle Outfitters. I'm sure there are some good shops in San Jose, but I rarely go that far south (live in Menlo Park).

I've been to Bicycle Express ... nice old place, seems pretty old skool. They were very knowledgeable when I went there (this was before I started seriously riding). If they're close, not a bad choice!

I really like Sun bike shop in San Jose off of Landess in Milpitas. Small shop but they have the stuff ;) Bought my bike there last month also.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I was wondering if anyone knows how knowledgeable the maintenance people at the performance shops in the bay area(redwood city, cambell, and fremont) are?? I'm assuming at least one of them has a decent mechanic.

I bought my bike from them, so I was wondering if I should take advantage of their free "tune-up" service, or if I should just go elsewhere.

All I got to say about "free" is to not expect too much since it's "free." :rolleyes:

I've been going to Sloughs for years, in SJ off Stevens Creek not far from the 280/880 interchange. He's pretty busy, and he doesn't hire much help, but I think he's a great mechanic. He has all kinds of old parts too, if that's your thing (he has new, too).
