so if all goes well, i should be the happy new owner of a slightly used subaru wagon this weekend. :) however, i will have to sell my pick up truck. i've had it for 11 years.

but i don't know if i will be able to adapt.

how will i carry big stuff, like furniture or a washing machine?

oh... this is kinda scary for some reason. :(

Ahhhh, you've become like the rest of us. Looking for friends who own trucks when it's time to move, etc :)

Yeah once I sold my truck I think my nearest gas station went bankrupt.

My wife drives a Subaru Forester. Its a '98 that we bought used. Its been real good to us. Only one minor repair issue in the 5+ years we've had it.

Not sure if your getting the Outback or the Forester. The Forester has more head room. I've carred a sofa to the dump in the back of the Forester by laying down the two back seats.

You've had a truck for 11 years and somebody is willing to PAY you for it? Amazing in and of itself. ;)

You can rent a truck. Driving a more energy efficient car and renting a truck when you need to (assuming you dont need to that often) will work out to less money in the long run.

yeah, and it's domestic too.

i took pretty good care of it, mechanically anyway.

but wow - i think i'm gonna need a former pickup owners support group or something.

what have i done?

I felt the same way when I sold my 91 F250 last year. Then I realized that I am now able to park anywhere I like, dont pay an arm and a leg for diesel, and no one asks me to help move their crap :)

Trailers go for ~$150 and up from HF.

I was thinkin the same thing. Put a trailer hitch on the subaru, and get a small trailer for when you need to haul stuff.

I went from truck to Subaru wagon too. I've taken my Subaru in the dirt and the snow.

The last time I was riding in the dirt, a 2WD truck got stuck due to lack of traction. I bet the driver of the truck was embarrassed when he saw me drive by in my wagon.

When clearance is not a problem, I love it when I can drive on icy/lightly-covered-in-snow roads and I pass up trucks and SUV's.

+2, a small utility trailer isn't that expensive to purchase or maintain.

Trailers go for ~$150 and up from HF.Exactly what I did when I sold the Avalanche and bought the Jeep. A 4X6 trailer will haul appliances, lumber, landscaping stuff, etc. just fine. And I don't get asked to help other people move because they don't see a truck.

I did this too for awhile. You'd be amazed at the amount of stuff you can haul with a Honda Del Sol and a 4'x4' utility trailer (~$165 at Harbor Freight). I still have the trailer but since I got my Element I don't use it much anymore.

From my travels to Europe and New Zealand, I noticed that over 80% of the sedans/hatches/wagons have hitches. But in the US, it seems that less than 5% have hitches. The mentality here is that you need to have a ginormous (yes, it's in the Webster's dictionary) truck to tow even the smallest trailers.

well, i know what everyone is talking about with the moving thing. i never realized how many 'old firends' i had until i bought a pick up truck. i did learn to say no, but it took a while.

i think the small trailer is a grand idea. :)
i will survive!
thanks!
