Does it have rack eyelets on the frame? I can't seem to tell.

rack and fender eyelets both, it appears.

I’ve had one since Feb, using it exclusively as a daily commuter.
It’s cool: Sweet ride, relaxed handling, great paint job. Components seem pretty solid, not great, but a good value.

It is stock except for my Brooks (so I can’t comment on the saddle), added fenders and a rear rack.

My only complaint is brake squeal, but that wouldn’t keep me from buying one.

brake squeal's not the frame's fault there guy.

Why does he say a frame is 60cm when it is actually 56cm? I don't get it. Why do the frames stop at 56cm, it seems kinda small?

i think a link and a note about sizing should be included in the first post of the thread (trust me, this is easier than the way ss/fg did it). don't pay attention to iro's "size," their top tube is usually a little longer than the seat tube and especially for these frames the top tube is what matters.

the "size" 60 rob roy has a 57cm top tube.

Nominal size of 60cm is the rough equivalent in traditional road sizing (center-to-top, horizontal top tube) which you would use to compare with (for example) the .67 Lemond formula.

If I ride a 56cm sized bike, I should order the 58cm IRO which has a top tube lenth of 56cm?

dirtyphotons

rob roy's top tube slopes less than a cm from front to back. it's essentially horizontal.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/120/314428087_1c44d88fe9.jpg

and yes mr. luteus, that is what i'm saying. seat tube measurements on these frames are misleading, as the seat clamp is almost 2 cm above the center of the seat cluster. i actually have a size 58 rob roy and the tt seems a hair longer than 56cm, but less than 57. you'd probably fit on either a "size" 58 or a 56, depending on if you like the tt a little long or a little short.

Just to echo the statements on sizing:

Tony has told me he rides a 60cm and he is 6' tall, even. I'm 5'10" and would usually ride a 56, but Tony told me to pony up on the 58.

I was reading an article lately about how people in 'merica buy bikes too small for them frequently because they're scared of the bigger sizes. However, a bike that is big enough for you will end up being better overall for fitting and efficiency.

I got in on the SS/FG forum IRO group buy and it went very well. If I didn't already have a Bianchi San Jose commuter I'd be all over this. Good luck!

Hmm, I'm about 5'9" with an exact 32" inseam (or whatever the floor-to-crotch measurement is called). I was looking at the standover height and the 58 has a 32" SO... TT length might be more important for fit - but I was thinking a SO height >= inseam could be a problem...

Thoughts on whether I should be on a 56 or 58? (I mainly just want to know if I definitely shouldn't be on a 58 due to the SO)

Assuming the 32" is from floor to pubic bone, the Lemond formulas are:
32" x 2.54 x 0.67 = 54.5cm (traditional frame, C-T)
32" x 2.54 x 0.65 = 52.8cm (traditional frame, C-C)
By both measures the size 58 frame would be too large, even without accounting for the sloping top tube.

OK, thanks, I'll stick with the 56...

I’m 5’10” with the legs of a 5’8” person (thanks mom). I went with the 56 and have never bought a bike that fit me so well out of the box.

Nice bike ‘dirty’ if it wasn’t for the springs on your B17 (I assume) I’d be chasing you down wanting my bike back -mine has a Brooks Pro. Armadillos too?

OhiOH, you and I must be long-separated twins. I'd emailed Adam about a 54 and now I'm going to have to seriously reconsider about getting the 56. I'm going to measure my other bikes and compare the spec chart on the IRO site first.

actually that's a pretty old picture of it. right now it's headed toward race trim. stripped but for the essentials and the brooks has gotta go for the season.

i'm rolling on ritchey speedmax pros, which feel great on road and off and are pretty light.

I notice that the sizing is pretty weird, too. I usually cruise on 54cm frames, and for cyclocross, most of the ones that look like they would fit me are 52cm. But, based on the geometry over at IRO, I should be getting a 56cm (based mostly on top tube length and stand-over height).

Ok, so, here;s the scoop. Tony said there's enough
interest it would actually be one last Rob Roy build.
So, this is coming from the factory and will cost
around $160. He quoted high because he hasn't gotten
the final price from the builders yet. However, it
may be lower, no promises.

If we get 50 people we get the choice of one color. I
think we would have to come to a consensus on which
one. If we get 100 people 3 colors become available
and we can each choose individually. We're at just
over 40 right now and I anticipate 50 will come easily
over the weekend. IF somebody would update the
bikeforums thread I would appreciate it as I am VERY
busy at the moment.

As far as frame mods, I know we all want our dream
bike, but this really was for the Rob Roy, so if
you're still into it then good deal, and I appreciate
those of you that are. I'll see if Tony has anything
to say about that aspect, but I'm not sure about
pushing it.

I think the mass interest is what pushed him to decide
to do a build...I don't think he really expected me to
get 40 people this quick. He probably expected more
like 25 and for that he had frames in stock.

Anyways, guys, thanks for being patient...Next update
will be Monday.

I sent a PM yesterday cuz I didn't have email access, and then didn't get a chance to send an email... I again don't have access right now but I would be in for either a 58 or a 60 and my wife might possibly be in for a 52 or 54.

I like the blue but my only input would be if the # gets up to close to 100, like say... 75? Personally I would wait a bit longer to get it up to 100 in order to have the other color options. So basically my 2 cents is if it gets close to 100 I think waiting for 100 would be smart.

I pretty much don't care about the color, but I would care about the options - I like the Rob Roy as is, and that's what I thought this group buy was about. I also thought that it would be about buying Tony's existing stock, as in, I could have the frame sooner than later. If we need to get into having him have a bunch built, that means we're not going to see the frame for several months - that's how the the other IRO group buy went. I'm not too stoked at the prospect of having to wait, yes, I'll likely still buy one, but I'll also probably end up buying something else in between. No, I don't need another bike, nor another two, but I have a problem...

odie91

yes, the group buy frame will be spec'd EXACTLY the same as the Rob Roy. Tony is going to give the manufacturer one last bulk run before he phases this frame out of his product line.

Odie, you a friend of Tony's?

That's pretty much what I thought, but I was directly given the confirmation that color would be an option. If blue is what people want then that's what we get, but to be fair and honest I'd like to run it as a vote. When we get the options just e-mail me your preference (if you're on my list or want to be on it) and we'll go with the majority vote.

For good intents, I won't be throwing my vote in...and if you want to have a second judge to make sure I'm honest on the count we can set that up, too.

I'll be updating everyone soon.

How close to a 100 e-mails for the Rob Roy are we and how long is it going to be before the orders get put in?

climbhoser
08-21-07, 10:07 AM
SO, Tony has said he'll put up a deposit page when he knows the final price. Right now he's just waiting for his factory to get back to him (overseas). We have 60 people on MY list, and that's not counting those who want more than 1 bike. We're close to 100.

I had an idea if there are those of you who are willing...Craigslist.

Post this group buy on Craigslist and include my e-mail. Unfortunately I don't have time to go through every city in America and do this, but if everybody does one city we'll get it covered pretty quick. That would ensure that we get 100 and a choice of color!

I'll be trying to get in touch with Tony throughout the day for some final details.

TimJ

I'll put a post up on Los Angeles Craigslist today.

TimJ

I'm sure everyone got this but I thought it'd be good to post here:

So, we have some good news!

We have garnered enough people that Tony will give us
the choice of two colors. that means we get to come
to a consensus as to which two colors will be
available and then each of us will get to choose which
of the two we like best.

The way I would like to run it is for everybody to
send in their top pick for color. Just take a look at
a crayola crayon box and pick your favorite (keeping
to basics is always good)! Send it in and I'll come
up with a list of the suggestions. From that we can
do some minor squabbling to pare down the list a bit
and then conclude with a vote.

For those of you who are cc'd my browser is acting up.
Please be kind and don't abuse my technological
incompetence by flaming each other. We can do this in
the open forum on bikeforums.net or if everyone is
happy we can just have a mass e-mailing. I've tried
to keep everyone bcc'd until now.

Also, I realize that color is somewhat important to
some people, but it is a luxury that we are going to
be able to choose. In that vein, I would like it if
everyone could act adult and we could minmize the
moaning and griping. Like I said, just pick your
favorite and send it to me for now.

Also, Tony has indicated he will do builds. He said
on the MarkV build the total bike came in at $350,
which is a huge discount! He said it would be
somewhat similar, but a touch more due to brakes.

Final price will be worked out in about a week when we
have settled on a color.

I'll be out of town until Friday night and I don't
expect to have internet access, so for now be kind!
If someone wants to open a color debate forum in
bikeforums that's up to you! But, again, let's please
be civil!

Well the special colors are probably just for the orders that will have to be built and can't be filled by the current stock Tony's looking to clear out.
