If any of you have been monitoring the group buy in cyclocross or the previous one in SS/FG well, here's the new news:
It is happening. Well, sort of. What I need is a name and certain contact information from everyone interested. What Tony has told me is that this bike will no longer be available down the line, but he has no intentions of putting a sale on the current stock (instead just letting it sell out slowly). What that means is that it is the current Rob Roy frame and I'm pretty sure color as well. I'm also pretty sure he has a good size run available, so don't fret that aspect.
Once I have a list of at least 40 people with their size preferences, names and certain contact information (i.e. you will answer THAT phone or look in THAT e-mail) I'll get back to Tony and, for instance, if there's a mass run on the 58 then he might come short. So, if you want one for a great price, and this is a frame that will soon be no more, e-mail me at:
climbhoserATyahooDOTcom
My name is Adam and I'll be the liason. I want this frame pretty bad myself, so you can be sure I'll be on top of this. Feel free to post questions, but your best bet is a direct e-mail to me.

And if he just put a derailler hanger on there, I think he'd give the Cross-Check a challenge, but I digress.

I can't disagree, but that's obviously not his business model. Tony's a singlespeeder through and through. Well, his bikes are at least.

He said he was probably going to change some things. This group buy would be kind of like a mass sale for him. I don't know if he'd be putting it on sale otherwise, but I like the Rob Roy the way it is and if you do, too, then make sure and E-MAIL me to be put on the master list.
He didn't quote $. He told me to get a list, at least 40 people, and if that could be done he would do a "group buy." I take that to mean a deep discount not unlike previous group buys he's done. As soon as I have 40 people I'll be going to him with the list of people that want a great price on a classic frame and we'll be chatting about the price.

Think of your name on the list as weight. The more people on the list the better chance Tony will give us a good break on the price. I wish I could give you a number, but he didn't give me one. If you want to call him yourself you can ask him and feel free to post here. You can tell him that I already have 12 FOR SUREs as well.

Guys, this is an awesome commuter. All steel so it'll soak up the road bumps and the relaxed 'cross geometry makes it extremely accomodating. I've seen these with internally geared hubs and they look amazing. Put whatever componentry you like on it and make it your dream bike.
All this for a frame in the $150 range (just a guesstimate. I actually don't know yet what Tony will ask for these, but I can't be far off).

What an amazing utility bike. 'Cross geometry, steel frame...put an internally geared hub on it and you have a bike for every day.

How much would the frame cost, and how much would be required up-front? And are we talking frame + fork, or just frame, or an option?

I'll be back in town for a few days starting Friday night. Gots to see the g/f on her school break and say "hi" to the family.
BTW...what does hills here have to do with that bike? I've never heard of it, is it supposed to be good for hills or something?

Frame + fork.
Don't know cost, unfortunately. I'll call Tony tomorrow morning with a preliminary list and see what he has to say about putting a price on it.
The way it's going right now I'm like a freelance marketer that is getting nothing except a cheap bike, too. He said stir the pot, see who wants one. I said ok, I'll get back to you when I have 40 people who want one. Enough people want to know a price, though, that we could hit 40 lots faster if we had it, so I'll go to him tomorrow with 20 and see if he'll set it in stone (unless I get 40 by tomorrow). It's late out there right now, though, so it will have to wait til tomorrow.
Remember, E-MAIL me to ensure you're on the list

It has rear facing horizontal dropouts so most people use it as a SS/FG. However, with an internally geared hub it is an almost unbeatable touring bike or commuter.
Is it really necessary to have 15 threads looking for people to join you in this venture? This whole thing smells like a huge scam.

IRO does group buys. Just go look at the SS/FG forum. They recently did a group buy from IRO and got a nice discount on their order.

KT, it's a great singlespeed cyclocrosser frame that can double as a decent commuter if you deck it out with an internally geared hub.

remember, no guarantees on the price...that is a working guesstimate based on past group buys. I just don't want anybody disappointed, though I'm confident that won't happen.

I'm always skeptical when a new member posts more than a dozen messages looking for people to join a list for anything, much less a "group buy"

Hey, I know how it looks. The fact is that I really want this to happen and Tony told me he wants 40 people. If we get that then we get a really frickin' awesome frame at a great price.
Also, I work on the phone all day staring at a CPU in a cube. I have nothing better to do most of the time than type away! That and I'm in sales, so I kind of have a penchant for the verbal diarrhea as it is. So, I'm invested in this simply because:
a)I'm a good person
and
b)I really want this frame and need to save every penny if I can just to get it.
See, my wife can spend my money, but I can't...I'm sure you can associate with that ;)

What a weird thing to say, considering how hugely successful the last group buy was. IRO sold something on the order of 500 frames, and just about everyone who got one has been thrilled with their bike.

Indeed - I got in on the last IRO group buy and I couldn't be happier, I'm all over this one. Tony said that he'd do another group buy, just later in the season/off-season so that the overhead wouldn't burden him during peak times. The group buy on the ss/fg board was crazy successful and produced a lot of happy riders, myself included. We all paid $150 for custom frame/fork and there's peeps flipping them for more than twice that on ebay - not me, I'm riding mine, just wanted to give you all some perspective.
