Of Fenders and Mudflaps

I recently bought a pair of SKS P45 (http://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30&action=details&sku=FE1002) fenders for my Trek 7.3 FX from AEBike.com but they didn't come with mudflaps. Lots of threads around here recommended mudflaps and many suggested making your own but I didn't want go the Fred(hope I'm using that right) route. Wallbike carries SKS mudflaps but they seemed a little short to be very effective so I kept searching. I knew Planet Bike carried small parts for their fenders so I decided to take a chance on a pair of Cascadia Hybrid (http://ecom1.planetbike.com/7026_1.html) flaps. They fit the SKS fenders perfectly, look stock, and provide great coverage. Now I'm ready for any slop the street throws at me. Well almost any.

Pretty nice, but I think I would still prefer the homemade ones. I had a set made out of lineouleum but my current set is made from two layers of a tube that gave up the ghost, they are long (almost drag on the ground) flexible, yet heavy enough they stay in place in the wind. Wider also.

I like mud flaps on my commuters and tour bikes. I used to make my own out of whatever came along that was flexible enough, even an old cereal box wrapped in shrink wrap will work:rolleyes: (I was using it for a template;))

The leather ones look really nice on a vintage ride. Take a look at the ones on this bike (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=323962)...sky's the limit!:D

Thanks for the tip! I had just ordered the P45's this morning before I read this post and was wondering what to do about mudflaps! I just ordered the flaps from PB - they were only $5 with free shipping! :o

I bought and installed the PB Cascadia flaps on my Freddy's and they work great, a big improvement over the stock flaps.

for $5 and free shipping. You can't go wrong.

Thanks for the tip on the PB flaps. I'll get some for my SKS too, to replace the ugly old duct tape flaps that are falling apart. What, PB doesn't have the ones with "truck driver mud flap girl"?
Can't remember last time it rained here in southern cal, maybe 4 or 5 months ago, but the fenders and flaps keep a lot of sand and grit off the chain of my daily driver commute bike. Hate to clean and lube chains all the time, so a few bucks for fenders and flaps is worth it.

back int he late 80's, early 90's ont he North Shore mountian bike scene in BC, we used to cut bleach bottles in half and make huge scoop mudflaps for the monsoon winters. We mated the bleach bottles with the old Syncros fenders (god i miss those...)

Electra makes some. They have writing on the metal bit down at the bottom that'll come off with steel wool. I found them at REI for around $3 at the time.

I used a single rivet and then epoxy and it's held up very well for the few months I used it, but I've disassembled that bike since.

I made a front mudflap from an old milk jug. Works fine. I'll make the next one a little bigger.
