I'm thinking of picking up a double-leg kickstand because I'm tired of balancing my bike while mounting my panniers. Right now I ride with: (1) Arkel bug, mounted rider's left (2) Arkel briefcase mounted riders right and (3) A ghetto bag I put on the top of the rack (lunch). Normally I'm loaded with my laptop and some files in the briefcase (~20-25 lbs) and the bug is my clothing/raingear/lights/toolbox at ~10-20 lbs, so I may run some different weights in each side. Sometimes I skip the bug for quick coffeehouse trips. All this on an old large Rockhopper frame (~1992). I don't use front panniers and have fenders installed (if it makes a difference).
I did a board search and found some old posts that definitely leaned toward the ESGE 2-leg kickstand. I was wondering if there's anything new out there that people love.
I want something that I can throw down and will stabilize my ride with possibly 15-20 pounds of asymmetric loading. I'm tired of the instability/balance game I'm presently playing while I adjust rain gear, add lights, etc.

That's some great work! Any experience with these? That last "sheldon's offering" is the one that had prior posts, some complained about incompatibility.

Don't own any of them, but do want a couple. The normal type (http://store.valueweb.com/servlet/poweron/Detail?no=133) would probably suit me, and I'm sure I could make it work, but I'd hate to pay $40+ dollars for an item I have to modify. I'll be keeping my eye out for a cheaper version...
Just called my "Local Dealer" to get a price. He looked it up in his book and said, "Holy crap!" I asked, "What, about $40.00?" He said, "Yeah, $44.00, that's a lot for a kickstand." I had to agree, and thanked him for his trouble. Not sure I'll ever own one of those buggers now!

Don't know how much it is but my LBS (http://ucycle.com/accessory/item.php?name=hebie_intro) has some. I'll be looking for one once I get my touring bike :p

For all of the LBSes in Portland, I had never been in one before that I truly felt "at home" in like so many BF members describe. Not even the LBS who sold me my Breezer. Now I have one (http://clevercycles.com/). :)

One caveat I've heard with double kickstands is that they can be pretty unstable on terrain that's not smooth or flat.

Yes, I have used those types of kickstands for many years. They are WONDERFUL. They are absolutely the best kind of stand for folks who load up their bicycles with lots of heavy stuff.
However, they are heavy and then look a little geaky.
$44.00 seems expensive. I bought some in Japan last year (which is an expensive place), for about $15.00 each.

back on topic, the ESGE-Pfletcher two legged kickstand is solid, reliable, and catches the eye of other bicyclists when deployed - even had a young, downhilling BMX'er type at the bike shop calling it 'Rad' today (I rode the heavy tourer to work, had to stop at the farmers' market on the way to pick up veggies...)

I see you have a Breezer, Ornery. I do, too. If you check out your owner's manual, you will see that it specifically recommends the ESGE/Pletcher double-legged kickstand as a replacement for the stock kickstand on Breezer bikes for those of us who carry heavy loads. That's a good indication to me that it will fit well on our bikes.
I see that Alfred E. Bike is carrying it for just under $40 (http://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30&action=details&sku=KI5001).

I have the Pletscher double leg kickstand on my touring/commuter. I too ride with the Arkel Briefcase on one side, and I have an Arkel T-42 Pannier on the other. The kickstand holds the bike stable when loading the panniers (although if they are heavily loaded, it is not super-stable), it folds easily and is not as heavy as some of the options out there.

The best thing about it is, IMO, that with panniers fore and aft you can take either wheel off without difficulty.
