I'm currently 6'0" and a hearty 295, my brother and I decided that we would try and do a sprint triathlon in order to get into shape. I've been reading through the forums trying to find what a good bike would be, but no thread seems to fully address what I'm looking for -- maybe I'm just don't know where to look. I'm looking for a bike under $1k that would be halfway acceptable for a triathlon. I know that I really want flat bars, other than that I'm open to suggestions. From what I've seen the Jamis Coda Comp and the Trek 7.6 FX seem to be good fits, but if anyone can suggest which is better, or even a better bike I would appreciate it! I'll keep yall posted with updates. Thanks!

For only doing a sprint, get any bike you want. You don't need a "Tri" bike for that. From what everyone has said in other posts about it, you will see mountain bikes at some Olympic distance triathlons. Use any bike you want. I bought a Jamis Ventura Sport, just to get a road bike for getting in good enough shape to do an Olympic distance next year.
Buy whatever road bike you like that fits you. You can always buy some aerobars to put on the bike if you start doing longer distances.

Find a not too expensive bike that fits and get out and ride. Of the three parts of the triathlon, running is the toughest on the body. I'd suggest focusing on riding and swimming and wait a bit before investing much time training to run. Your knees will thank you for this. ;)
