I was curious what might the lower braze-ons on the 07' Trek 520 are used for. There are two, one above and one below the front derailier on the seat tube, and two on the underside of the down tube near the bottom bracket shell. These seem like weird places to put water bottles or any gear for that matter. Does any one know whats up with these funky spots?

They will almost certainly be for water bottles. Below the downtube is frequently used to hold the fuel bottle for the camp stove.

yeah, I could see holding fuel below the down tube. That seems like a pretty good Idea. But can I really put a water bottle over the front derailier clamp?

There's no issue with putting the water bottle over the clamp. I've done it on many bikes, especially small ones.
