With that budget I'd start checking craigslist for used bikes locally. Look for a bikeshop brand, at that range you can pretty typically find some Giants, Gary Fishers, or GTs as well as plenty of Treks. Do you know what size you would need?

Look at a leftover Schwinn Mesa w/o the disk brakes. My LBS has a 06 for 199.99. Not too bad of a bike.

If you don't expect to much...you'll never be let down!

I live in CT....

But since you're a newbie, I'd never recommend getting a bike you've never ridden. The bike is in great condition, but fit and sizing are important too:)

Sorry though :D

if I had to get a brand new bike for that price I would look at Dicks, the bikes seem decent for the pricepoint, but set-up is frequently dubious.

Reread all of the replies you have gotten ('Never buy your first bike online' & 'For $200 look for used for the best deal' and then go READ THIS THREAD (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=67259). Basically everything I've seen for $200 is just about the same.

You get what you pay for. If you're serious about mtb stick with actual bike shops and stay away from thrift shops such as Walmart, Toys R Us, etc.

Well your not going to get anything decent for $200.

Do not buy a bike from a department store.

Visit bike shops and they will offer you advice and allow you to test ride bikes in your price range.
