Just moved out here and was wondering if anyone in huntington beach rides fixed? Looking for some people to ride with. Here's a photo of my bike.

Well I hope you're a cool fixer. While we were sitting at the beachstop on Sunday, some dude rode up on a fixie, real arrogant SOB! I hade to stop and take a second look at the bike as he rode up cause his bike looked almost like Roadfix's bike. I had to get a better look thinking maybe this guy stole it. I took a second look and noticed it was a liiiiiitle bit different.

As the guy parked his bike, one of our friends said," a fixie". The guy walked by like an arrogant SOB. I looked at Gina and said,"It looks almost identical to George's bike". The guy heard me and said,"NO! IT"S NOT IDENTICAL TO GEORGE'S BIKE!".

I was shocked that he even heard me. I paused for a second then asked," SO THEN WHY CAN'T IT BE IDENTICAL TO GEORGE'S BIKE?". He replied, "cause it's mine".

Man that guy left a bad taste on my tongue! Now i have it that all fixies are arrogant SOB's. I know I shouldn't think that way, but see what you started GEORGE?!:D

BTW, welcome to SoCal and HB!:p

I must admit, there's some truth to that. My wife and co-workers think that too about me but obviously don't see the fixie connection :p as they're not cyclists, but I can relate with your point of view and in general, that's been my observation as well regarding some fixie riders I meet on the streets. I'm not sure why I see myself exhibiting that behavior .....I'm not even an artist, I shouldn't fit in that mold. :D:D:D

Cool looking bike!

I just got back from a 5 mile jaunt to the LBS and back. :) Had to pick up afew water bottle cages and show off my bike a bit since the guys there helped me with afew things on it.

I've been riding it pretty much every saturday afternoon for the last 3 weeks out on SART (the san bernardino/riverside portion, 20 miles). It's alot of fun but i haven't had the balls to ride it out on the street very much. Maybe this weekend i'll try a longer ride and see how i hold up.

Actually, that's just a cell phone camera effect.

Nope, it's a totally bone stock Giant Bowery. I took off the giant Giant stickers because they were ugly. Though I'd like cyclocross frame.

That thing has cantis. Slap some 'cross tires on and hit the dirt!

Haha, I think the 70's glamor effect got to you. There are no cantis. They're regular Tekro road calipers. Although there was a report of success in putting 700x31 knobbies on. Hhhhmmmm . . . .

Oh yeah...don't know if anyone else has had any problems but beware of a few wannabe EMO rockers that like to heckle and buzz a road cyclists around and between Main/PCH, Warner/PCH and the general "Bolsa Chica" area. Appearntly riding a road bike means you're a f@g and a ****...and they like to let you know.

I used to have a really nice Nishiki conversion, but when my wife started divorce preceedings I sold it (to ovoleg, much less... heh) in case I'd need money for the mortgage or bills. Now that I'm budgetarily on my feet, I bought a new one:

http://velospace.org/files/mercier01.JPG

I actually live in La Habra (about 30 minutes north of HB on Beach Blvd) but I love to ride in HB. Often I will rack my bike and drive down there so I can ride up and down the coast for a while; other times I'll just tack a few miles along the coast on to my SART rides (although those are generally on my roadie).

I second the earlier poster's plug for lafixed.com; lotsa good, local fixie folk on that board.

Anyway, I'd love to hook up with some other fixie riders for regular rides/screw-around sessions that are reasonably local to me.

Tim.

Biked? Or on foot? If the latter, we just need to get a bunch of us together and ride in front of them. If they speak up we all skid to a stop and turn around real slow and badassed-like.

I bet they run. :)

Even though I am very much a lover of all things woman there is a sinister part of me that wants to find the brightest pink jersey I can find and have "Gay $#%*ing Pride" silkscreened on the back of it just for them. It is the same part of my brain that forces me to find ties that are the worst possible match for my work uniform and proudly wear them to work to piss off my superiors.

I think they are just trying to resist a culture that is so loudly calling their name.
-They like skin tight pants...cycling has spandex.
-They like ugly haircuts...cycling has helmet head.
-They like being emotional...cycling has losing a race by 3/10ths of a second.

A few friends and I saw a green Mercier at TJ's in Brea at night a month or so ago and are still trying to figure out who that is. It was seen there during their "stocking hours" late at night. Your frame looks to be a bit bigger than the one we saw.

Funny, I work for a chemical company near the Santa Ana bike path near the Orange/Anaheim border. I'm close enough to ID friends riding by when looking out the window though.

I commute HB to Encinitas 3 times a week with a 49 x 15 or 16 (depending how sore my legs are) .

I did Butterfield Double with a 49 x 16

Solvang Double with a 49 x 15.

I tried a 49 x 18 on my commute but I felt I was spinning too much. I like to roll a big gear. I have climbed Palomar with a 49 x 16 and Ridge Park with a 49 x 15 (although I would not ever recommend that... IT SUCKED). I just had to see if I could do it (and I couldn't let Brandy see me dismount)

try this link on my website and plug in gear combinations you are familar with like "I know what a 39 x 15 or 53 x 17 feels like" and then pop in the options you are considering.

http://www.epictrain.com/files/Gear_Inch_Calculator.xls or

www.epictrain.com (http://www.epictrain.com) home page
then "links"
then scroll down to the bottom and use "Gear Inch Calculator MSExcel"

I am considering a 49 x 17 for 508. Cog backordered from Phil Wood...I hope it gets here soon. When it does we can do GMR with it.

Because I use my bike as a regular road bike. I ride in pelotons, pacelines, and climb and DESCEND mountains with it.

that still doesnt explain why you have a rear brake installed on your fixed gear.

I guess you like to have only your left hand cramp up on a 20-25 mile descent?
