I remember seeing one of the first "graphics capable" display units. It was a flourescent green (monochromatic) display with a hood around the top and sides to cut down on the glare. It was capable of displaying curves which were really increasingly smaller straight lines bent into angles to recreate the illusion of curves. Up until then CRT units were strictly alpha-numeric displays. Circa 1976

The computer was a DEC PDP-11 with hard disks the size of large pizzas. Eh, that enough nostalgia.

I don''t think anyone back than could have imagined the computers today. Machine evolution at the hand of man????? Does this make us Gods???? Will the artifical intelligences of tomorrow see us that way?????

My former boss got to speak at TED this year. I'd love to go but it's a pretty elite convention. That demo is amazing.

It could also radically blur the line between gaming and movies.

The simulated world keeps looking more real.

Think of cities like London or Manhattan which record all activity in public areas on video, from multiple angles. A crime, or demonstration, whatever could be recreated in three dimensions.

Let's face it...and this is from someone struggling to find his place in the new media (so I give the subject a great deal of thought), the majority of revenues generated by copyright royalties go to bloated megacorporations that serve as nothing but ponderous middlemen.

The new media seeks to eliminate the middleman, not destroy the author. The photographer that seeks recognition for a particular syle will not go unnoticed. Tiers are an important part of society, so people will still understand the disctinction between a pro and a hack, etc. But the most telling point of network technology such as this is that it will create new paradigms and ideas of the very nature of society and the individual.

Great questions of existence will arise, as the internet becomes ever more dreamlike and a better reflection of the collective subconscious than previous artistic records ever could.

Not really. The concern he addresses is really my biggest concern (especially as a photographer myself)

I would really like to know what kind of computer resources (CPU cycles, RAM, VRAM) are sucked up to make this happen.

If it's rather minimal, then this could change the way computers are used.

Anyone have some oldass hardware we can try it out on? Something that would represent the minimum specs?

Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz, 512 MB RAM... Uh, that's all I know. <surrenders nerd card I snagged out of some engineer's back pocket>

But it worked just fine, except on one particular photo it kind of flashed and a little text window popped up that it was having trouble with the graphic resolution and recommended making the window smaller. So I brought it down from full screen, and it was fine.

As usual, no fun for us Mac users.
