Foo - Anybody ever beat a computer at chess before?

If so, how? And good are you? I play the chess game on my mac and it destroys me, everytime.

Yeah, but this was the 80's. I was a chess player back then (meaning I played in tournaments). Didn't we have this conversation already? You need to go to a chess club if you want to get better.

I play other ppl on yahoo games whenever I am at work or at the internet cafe or school (sometimes). Today I beat someone rated 1831, and got beaten rather badly by a 12 year old girl from the filipines (I forget her rating), and I play this guy at my work whom I now beat on a regular basis (the last four games infact). :beer:

Chess.app is based on GNUChess, and GNUChess is brutal. At least to me. But I suck at chess. :rolleyes:

back when they first came out they could be beat. I could often draw or win the old ones. I have not played chess for years. Lets see, I have been married since 91 and since then it seems I have had no time to play. Someone mentioned if you want to get better enter a chess club. I agree. Find someone that beats you regularly and play them till they dont beat you anymore, repeat.

^^In english, pls. :beer:The chess app that comes with OS X uses an open-source chess engine called GNUChess (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnuchess), which has been in development since the 80s. As far as I can tell, it is very good at its job. :p

My wife bought me one a while ago. I played for the longest time and on one particular game it seemed easier than the rest. I ended up winning but like I said, I could tell I was going towin. Has not happened since.

No, but I have beaten it at backgammon. I never really got into chess.

Not the same thing at all. You see, at a club the games will be rated. People will
quickly find your weaknesses and rip you to tiny little shreds.

Then you go find ways to deal with it. That will involve books on openings, middlegame, endings, etc.

After you do that for a while.. you enter the field of combat.

You will want a book or two of chess puzzles. I used to do a couple every day, during lunch, anytime I felt like it, my favorite book was Pawn Structure Chess. Really helped me.

I used to be real good at beating the old windows chess... I have yet to beat the chess program that came with os x, even on easy:mad:

Back in college my dad got me one of those chessboards that was a self-contained opponent. That was over 20 years ago. I forget the name.

Now I don't consider myself all that good at chess, but I could get it to a point where it would:

1. give up.

2. cheat.

I never finished a game with that thing!

my dad had something like that too. On his, you had to press the piece down a little before you moved it, and press it down again once you placed it on its destination. It had a red light on each rank/file indicating to you where to move its piece. I don't think I ever beat it, but my dad used to beat it on a regular basis. (he was once a tournament player.)
