Tandem Cycling - Who's got one of these beauty's?

I've tried to track down who actually made this lovely bike but no joy. Lemonde, now owned by Trek, tell me they never did.

Has anyone ever seen one? Or know who made it?

It's a one-off that's presently owned by a friend in Washington state...

Off hand, I can't recall who made it for Lemond... If it really matters I can ask.

FWIW: Greg Lemond recently had Craig Calfee - who has previously.made some of the frames that Greg rode in the TdF - and Todd Shusterman team up to build him a carbon daVinci with independent coasting... which underscores Lemond's interest in tandems. This is actually Greg Lemond's 3rd Calfee tandem: Calfee introduced his first prototype Tetra Tetra Tandem around 1998 and Greg bought his first Tetra Tandem in 2000. He replaced it with an S&S Tetra Tandem in late 2002.

We talked with LeMond and his wife while on the El Tour de Tucson a few years back. Yes he has an interest in tandems. With them was a friend of ours (of RAAM and cookie fame) and tandem rider "Cookie" Coles from Georgia. Cookie and LeMond rode part of the El Tour on a borrowed tandem that year.
LeMond's interest in a Calfee with independent coasting started the idea of Todd having c/f tandems built by Calfee to daVinci's specs, and of ourse with the 3 BBs and independent pedaling. The best of both worlds!

Not this bike, but a LeMond - labeled steel framed bike arrived in a well-packed box from Wisconsin for me last week.

Built as an "experimental" frame in the late 90's, it follows the Trek T100/T200 geometry but has main tubes in Reynolds 853.

At last! Somebody who has heard of it! Yes, I would be interested to know who built it if you could ask. It just looks right to me from a design perspective. Not quite UCI legal but suspect the design could be modified a little to make it legal. Be interested to know how much it cost? Looks expensive!

Out of interest, if Greg rides tandems has anyone come up against him in a TT? How'd they get on?

He knew a few pieces of the history, but not all of it. I've got another feeler out to someone else who will likely have the rest of the history and will advise when I hear back.... probably a couple weeks or so.

I'm constantly trying to explain to people that tandem riding is about riding together, so unless Mr Fish and his partner happen to be Lance and Floyd, it's good to see top names being beaten. (And good to see top names putting themselves up to be beaten, despite not being at their peek.)

Heading into the final stage, however, an individual time trial finishing in Paris, LeMond was in second place overall. He was 50 seconds behind Laurent Fignon, who had won the Tour in 1983 and 1984. LeMond rode the time trial using then-novel aero bars, which gave him a significant aerodynamic advantage, to beat Fignon by 58 seconds to claim his second yellow jersey with a final victory margin of 8 seconds – the closest in the Tour's history.

And do we know what is the connection of LeMond and Trek? Trek owns LeMond bicycles now, but was LeMond involved as a shareholder in Trek?, is LeMond a Trek stockholder?. Just curious.

Trek is a privately held company, controlled by the Burke family. Trek has produced LeMond-branded bikes under a long-term licensing agreement with LeMond since the mid-90s.
