Hey guys.
I 'd like to build my first fixed wheel and naturally don't want to splurge (just yet).
Looking for an affordable hub I came across Formula. Some people say they are super crap.
What's your opinion on that? Is it super crap or just crap or..? Or maybe you can suggest some other make?
Thanks in advance.

Formula work fine. Just don't beat the crap out of it. I paid through the nose for Surly, but I would go Formula now that I know more.

Anybody who tells you these hubs are "crap" is an ignorant snob, or has never seen low-end Suzue or Sovos hubs.
The Formula/IRO/Harris Cyclery hubs are a super value, very well made and well designed. Highly recommended.

I think they are excellent hubs for the money. Anyone who tells you different is a fashionista. Remember you'll be riding on the street, not competing in a velodrome where 100ths of a second matter.
It seems that right now there are a lot of people who are more into the looks and brand name of their fixed gear bike parts then in actually riding them. It's a status thing, kind of like rich women and expensive handbags. Just ignore them, they'll be on to something else soon enough.

Get 'em. You'll be pleased. Do yourself a favor and get a decent rim though.

Formula makes lots of those name brand hubs people will tell you you need to buy. Nothing wrong with them,at all.
A good rim and solid build are certainly more important.
