Recreational & Family - Thoughts on this hybrid

My girlfriend is going to buy this hybrid so she can ride with me:

Don't do it!

Spend an extra $20-30 and get this one (http://bicyclesource.us/itemdetails.cfm?ID=13947) from a bike shop. It's not that much more cash for a bike that's assembled, adjusted, and fitted correctly, and a good bike shop will include at least the first (if not all) tuneups in the purchase.

My wife tried to return that one the very next day after she bought it, and Target wouldn't take it back because she had ridden it (just to test the fit), so it wasn't "new."

Of course, she couldn't get up on the pedals in the store, and they wouldn't let her take it out on the parking lot to try it. The headset is threadless, and you can only move the adjustable stem so far.

I'm calling it money spent on an education.

I think you should go to a few local bike shops, and look at what they have. You won't have to spend that much more to get a bike that fits, and is assembled and adjusted properly, and if it's not you can bring it back and have it fixed. A bike that fits and is adjusted correctly will be enjoyable to ride, and will be ridden more.

yeah you must be careful with those bikes tho they are a good price for the budget minded but there are trade offs "sometimes", its a chance sometimes you take ....they are made by pacific which they make also "mongoose & schwinn"...their bikes are ok but they are not of the highest quality...they're not for everyone i must add...i bought a mongoose comfort bike with all the features i wanted and looked very much like the schwinn cimmorin that they sell as well .online...then i had to return it...because it had the same problem as that (schwinn trail hybrid) you were interested... with the seat post not being able to come down all the way...the reason was that the water bottle holes were made to high up and were in the way of the seat post pole so the pole at lowest setting all the way down was resting on the water bottle hole..not good!!...manufacturer defect!!....so before you buy these you should shop around test them first & compare ....with bikes with better components or better made....just my 2 cents...

That Target Schwinn isn't terrible, might work out fine. Millions of people buy bikes from Target, Sears, Wal-Mart, etc., and are happy with them.

But I agree that if you spend an extra $20-$50 at a bike shop, that you could get a decidedly nicer bike. Such as a Schwinn Voyager or Trek 7000 or Giant Sedona ST.

I've seen some great deals on closeouts, floor demos, and even end-of-year selloffs of rental bikes.
