A buddy of mine and I want to do some trail riding at night. The lbs only has one type of light that the owner said were only good to "be seen". He said he can order me something worthwhile but I would like to get some input before he orders a couple of lights for my friend and I. I'm not sure what kind of light he is going to order but it was in the $50 price range. Any ideas and suggestions would be welcome.

Here is a link to a light comparison that is kinda handy

I don't believe there are any $50 dollar lights that are usefull for riding singletrack at night.
When I started trail riding I used a Night Rider Trailrat. It is probably the minimum amount of light you could use for trail riding and the cheapest light I know of that would work.
And keep in mind, you should really have a backup light with you (like a petzl headlamp or something) when you are out on the trail at night.
Some people make their own lights and instructions have been posted on this forum before. You could search here or maybe ask on the commuting forum. edit: or the lighting forum (I never knew we even had one of those)
Good luck, night riding is a blast
depends on how fast you want to go

i bought a cygolight 10w halogen last year ... I use it during the winter months when it gets dark early... it was like 60 dollars... you'd probably need 2 to properly light up the trail maybe 1 on bars and 1 on the helmet
