Southern California - SoCal Mornings and GETTING OUT OF BED?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What's tougher? Getting out of bed to go to work, or getting out of bed to go for a ride?
I hate getting up in the morning to go to work. I get up, then lay down again. Maybe I'll wake up long before it's time to get ready, but I'll stay in as long as I can. On the weekend, I'm up and ready to go.
Gina on the other hand can sleep 3 hours and is excited about getting up to go to work. More than likely add in some OT if given the chance. When the weekend comes, I'm up a 6 prepping the bikes while she stretches out bedtime as long as possible. I give her the option to stay home in bed but no, she wants to ride. 8 am comes and I'm still asking her to get out of bed. I can't 'tell her', cause she pretty much owns my ***!:D
What's your sit?

working = money = shopping
+OT = +money = +shopping
thats why gina jumps up to go to work.

All I can say is with a two year old in the house, if I don't get my butt out of bed early and get my ride in, I'll quickly get caught in the rhythm of the day and won't have time to squeeze in the ride later.

I get up at 6:15 a.m. every day whether I set an alarm or not. I think it's a personality defect.

I work for myself, which means I never stop working.
I'm always out of bed no later than 7:00am.
I try to wake up early every single day...
of course, I generally fail miserably.

Everyday at 3:30am. Set up for work, drink coffee, on ride days hop onto Sacha between 4:30-5:00am
If I have a lot of work to do, sometimes 2:30am, no ride.

Usually up at 4:30 am to hit the gym or I'll hit snooze five times and end up getting up at 6:00 am. Then I just go to work and hit the gym in the evening...well, that or the bottle. :D

I rather have my health than go and suffer at work on my days off...
I usually wake up at 5 am. But with the sun not really rising until 6 am, I haven't been getting out for morning rides. I don't like riding in the dark, even with lights, and if I wait until 6 am to go out, it makes me pretty late for work. So if I don't go to the gym, I will stay in bed until 6:30 or 7.

I love to get up early on my days off and hit the road before the wind picks up. If I'm lucky I can get back home and not ride in 20+mph winds.

Getting up for a ride is definitely easier. I actually *like* riding.
Sadly, I can't say the same about my job. It does pay for my riding habit though...

that's just sick.
A lot of days that's about when I'm starting to go to sleep.
I'll get up early to race, but avoid it if possible.

Im my old age, I've started to like getting up early. By early I mean 7. For ride days, I usually get up by 5 or 6 depending on the ride times and location without much problem.
By the way, 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30 are last night, not this morning. :)

I get up at 5 am, regardless of if it is a work day or weekend. This may make sense if I'm in SoCal, and need to get to a ride that starts at 7 am ... but in NorCal, the rides start at 9 or 10 am. Go figure!

I'd be lying if I'd say it's easier for me to get up for rides. I have to go to work, I don't have to ride.
I usually wake up for work at 5:30, and go on rides after work. Every weekend I try to get up in the morning, but I fail half the time. Just this morning I didn't get out til 8:30. I just blew off my ride today =\
Of course I have been doing two a days for a week (4 mile run at lunch, 20 mile ride after work) and my legs seem to be toasted today.

Getting out of bed for work is the worst. I always wake up too early, check my clock, go back to sleep. Wake up 15-30 minutes later, check my clock, go back to sleep. I repeat this cycle until I have to force myself up, get ready, and start riding uphill. Plus, it's really, really hot these days and I have no AC. So I wake up sweaty and miserable! :D
By the time I'm out the door, I'm thinking "!@#$ THE WORLD".

You sure it's not because of that young 20-year-old stud mailboy they just hired at her office? . . . :p
Getting up has always been a struggle for me, I think my deepest sleep is during the hour when I most need to get up! I'd like to get up very early and ride before work but I know myself and I don't know if I can keep that commitment. On the other hand I've overcome other bad habits, so........
Nice to see I'm not alone in this.
By the way, 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30 are last night, not this morning. :)
+ a bazillion!
If there were no such thing as a 24 hour day, my body would go to a 27 or 28 hour day (circadian rhythm?). I'm NEVER tired when I need to go to sleep at night, I always have to force myself to go to bed. I wonder if people like Joy have an internal day of 20 hours?

I wanted to go for a ride this morning but i slept in...
I even had the alarm clock set for 6:30am. :(
Maybe i'll go later but i need to wash 2 bikes and my car.
Well I always go for a ride on my way to work, so as hard as it is to get out of bed to go to work, I jabe the motivation of my ride to get me going.
i am almost never up before 11am. today i got up at 830 and it was horrible.

Ok, car is washed but bikes are not... I think i'll head out for a ride around 4:30-5:00pm though. :) Still haven't decided on a route though, probably something flat since my fixed gear is my only clean bike. :(
Getting up for work can be hard. Getting up for a ride... some rides are so worth it that I don't care what the hour is.
i built houses for 2 years and had to be up at around 6 every day and never got used to it. i am the anti-morning person.

I agree when I worked at 5am for a couple of months. I sure wasn't a morning person. Now I'm an anti-morning person.
It's a bit different for cycling. Actually, I wouldnt mind going and riding at most parts of the day. Once I get out there, I'm kind of glad I got up earlier :D
getting up early to ride or go snowboarding is usually no problem for me. i'm a night owl though, i usually don't get home from work until 1130 or 12, so i do all my message board posting after that and usually go to bed around 2 and fall asleep to recorded episodes of frasier or the wonder years.

I think it's mainly genetic. My whole family on my mother's side are (very) early risers. When I worked in the music biz, we would hit the clubs almost every night after work and I always found it difficult.
Now I set my own hours and love the quiet of pre-dawn mornings... no traffic, no noise, no heat and plenty of 24-hour gyms and grocery stores in my area. :D

w3rd y0.
For the 5 years i've been working since finishing college, my hours have been from 6:00am to 2:30pm... Which means getting my @$$ out of bed at 4:15-4:30am every morning. I'm still not used to it. And if i ride my bike to work, i'm up at 3:15-3:30am. It sucks.

Easier to wake up for work since I usually ride and hit the weights before work...
Work - wake up 4am
Ride - wake up 6am

I don't have a job, but I'm a student. I'm one of those people that if you get me up before 7 or 8, I'm good for the whole day, but if I get up after that, I have no energy and am lazy all day. Even though I'll get a small ride in.

Hi Beanz,
Practice getting up early to ride. When you start doing doubles (in 2008) the start time can be 4:00 AM / 4:30 AM. Even the "late" start time (for the fast riders) is no later than 6:00 AM. So that means (for me and Jackie) setting the alarm for 3:00 or 3:30 AM, and being dressed, fed and to the start an hour or so later (depending on how far away our motel is from the start).
I wake up for work every morning at 5:00 AM, no problem. On our recent Oregon Bike Ride (seven days, 435 mi. over 28,000 ft. of climbing) we set the alarm for 5:00 AM since we had to have the tent down, packed and gear loaded by 6:00 AM. On the other side of the coin, I do fall asleep easily for naps after rides, so that's how I (sometimes) make up for those really early wake-up calls!

The ones with the padded benches, cables, anti-grav straps, adjustable-tension machines... you know, stuff to make you sweaty and get your heart rate racing.

Fun ride nonetheless.
